EON Useage doubled after new meter installed - Help!

  • BTW its not E.On's fault if the new meter is faulty they are owned by the Meter Operator I believe. However they do have to take an interest and get it sorted out or changed if there is a fault. If there has been no change in the appliances used and lifestyle at the address then it seems the meter could be faulty.

What concerns me is this thing about not being allowed to switch. dogshome is spot on the main reason for a change of supplier not to go through is if there is an outstanding balance owing. The only other thing that crops up sometimes is if the supply number or meter details are not right. If the meter details are mixed up with someone else-s it might explain the random nature of the bills. The best way to check this is to ensure they hold the same MSN that is on your meter.

When we wanted to switch there was no amount owing except for that months electricity. They sent out a transfer from Norweb which I think disappeared decades ago (and became part of EON). The new suppliers could not switch because we had said we were with EON and the details said we were with EON. We asked EON to speak to the new company to explain why we were listed as Norweb but they refused. We then spoke to the new company but they couldn't do anything until EON got things sorted. Back to EON and we thought we were getting somewhere when they said they would redo the transfer and change the details. The new supplier said that EON had sent them details from Norweb a second time. We tried twice after that and had similar problems.

Haven't tried since because we now have a deficit in payments because of the high bills and their attempts at sorting it out.

    Thanks for your post
  • The only other change was that we'd installed under floor heating - run off the electricity - and had kept it on the lowest setting as advised by the manufacturers. We didn't think it could be that as £900 is a hell of a lot - but we stopped using the heating and the usage went back to normal. Needless to say, we haven't touched the under floor heating since!!! I still wonder how on earth it used so much electricity.

2 years later, we're still paying towards the arrears caused by that one bill so our monthly DD is crippling us!

Sorry you're also trying to get straight, I know how that feels.

We do have under floor heating in the bathrooms but that has been switched off for the past 8 months and prior to that it wasn't really used. There was no change in our bills or readings from it being on to off.
  • I don't understand this bit about E.On sending the information. When you change supplier the new suppliers tells the existing supplier you are leaving.I can't see how the name listed on ECOES makes any difference as you can put a contract through with the suppliers name on or put unknown. I'm stumped on this one I'm afraid.

You are absolutely certain that, at the time of the transfer, the supplier would've registed both meters? As this would stop a transfer going through, it would produce an error something like the supplier has on registered half the related site. If the meter was single rate by then it wouldn't/shouldn't matter.

    Hi All,
    Just to update you.

We had a check meter installed and it read just 1kwh out over a 1 week period. I also bought one of those OWL meter thingys (I know they're not perfect but just to give another reading) and all of the meters were saying the same thing. The check meter and our existing meter were just 1kwh apart and the OWL meter was about 5% above the other two. So the total amount of electricity used during the week was 205Kwh which equates to 10660kwh per year.

I think I have enough now to concede that our readings are right. Is there anything else I can check?

Thanks for all your suggestions and help

    Much appreciated

    Hi David,
There was only one meter at the time (took us ages to convince EON this) but when we applied to change supplier Scottish Power said they couldn't take over the supply because EON had sent out a form to them with Norweb on it rather than EON. EON said they didn't know why it happened and promised to send a corrected copy but this never materialised.

Hopefully we can get it sorted once we pay them the undercharge that is now on our account.

    cheers
    Kevin

Thats 2-3 times the average unless you have electric heating.

Whilst the check meter appears to show it's accurate, you still have a large jump in consumption. So, what has changed at your property?

If nothing, then I wouldn't suggest that the check meter is proving anything.

You had a meter reading for the new meter when they installed it. Does it match what the engineer wrote on the tag.

If the latest engineer or your own readings match they are are billing now and nothing has changed, it's more likely that the engineer got the opening reading wrong.

Also, if they get reads that they don't like for a meter change, they get Deemed (estimated) by the agent that the reads are passed via. These are frequently poor but they will show as Firm to you on the bill. Check that out.

If there are lots of actual reads, put them together, work out the difference between each and divide by the days. This will show you which period has caused the jump. If all reads have similiar per day values but the difference from the installed read and the next read caused it, your opening read is wrong.

    Hi krdrummer

Must admit, I'm a bit stumped here. Cannot see why you're having so many difficulties switching supplier.

Do you still have a complaint open with our Director's Office? If so, have they explained what may be causing this?

Might be worth having a chat with the agent who dealt with your complaint.

Also, your usage seems very high. Are you still discussing this with Elouise in our Consumption team?

If not, I'd suggest making a list of all your appliances and going through this with her.

I'd be happy to help, too. If you need me, drop an email to the address in my Profile. I'll gladly take a look.

  • If you are certain that the meter is not recording correctly then get them to fit a check meter in.
I dont know if they charge for this now but if you were proved correct there would be nothing to pay.
In 30 years I never came across any that were more than a handfull of units over. If your meter has a flashing neon it will be spot on.

Thanks Malc, I'm filling this in for her now so hopefully we'll get to the bottom of it.
