3. You are actually consuming more
4. The initial or current reading was wrong.
turn everything off, and check it still isn't spinning/flashing.
then measure it over several 24 hour periods

Cancelling the DD isn't the best idea, makes the problem worse.

make sure the immersion heater isn't on, if you have one

It should be fairly straightforward to test it's accuracy by switching everything off, then running something of a known (highish) wattage for an hour through a plugin wattage meter.

The meter reader not being able to get in doesn't stop you submitting an accurate reading.

I'll do that tomorrow.

Immersion is off and has been for the past 11 years

Cancelled the DD and set up a SO so that I have control over the amount taken. They were expecting me to stump up £200 per month!

It wasn't that the meter reader couldn't get in they did. They read the meter and the readings were never received at EON. Hence the reason why I have telephoned EON to give them accurate readings.

have you agreed this method and level of payment with eon, and if not considered the potential impact on your credit rating, and cost of electricity per kwh?

what readings and dates have you got?

• Hello krdrummer,

I’m sorry for the problems you’ve encountered over the past couple of years and also for the fact that you have not had a resolution yet. I hope someone is looking in to this for you already, you have mentioned that you’ve been through to the Directors Office which is good. What I can do is make sure we’re doing everything we can do if you like. If you want to contact me through the email address on my contact page, I can take a look for you.

cardew and closed have made some good points which could be responsible. It’s very rare that a meter runs too fast or too slow but it has happened before. A more plausible explanation would be the billing of the account. Maybe we have an incorrect reading somewhere. It’s hard to tell without the full details.

If you’ve still not got an answer, feel free to email in to me.

Thanks

Brian

Thanks for your post Brian

I spoke to a lovely lady today in the consumption dept, Elouise. She confirmed that before the meter had been installed the consumption was around 16 units per day and that since the meter has been installed that has increased to 34-36 units. She too couldn't think of why that would happen.

For me, the disappointment is that I'm the one having to do all the proving here. EON have accepted no responsibility at all, in fact, the clear message is that it is my fault as their systems and meters are perfect.

Once this is sorted I'll be submitting my invoice for the work carried out on their behalf so they can consider the extent of the issues. My Wife is disabled and this has taken such a toll that she just can't speak to EON, it gets her too worked up and flustered. I doubt if I'll be sticking with EON after this. We've tried moving three times in the past 18 months but each time EON have sent out the wrong details and the other supplier hasn't been able to accept our transfer. Once they sent transfer details from Norweb!! Go figure.

No, I just told them what was going to happen. The impact has been that they have frozen any action on the account (originally sent to third party collection) as they forgot that my account was the subject of a complaint. Some things are more important than credit ratings like the truth and integrity.

The readings I have are:

3 August 2007 = reading 61810 = meter reader reading
To
8 February 2008 = reading 64579 = estimated reading

8 February 2008 = reading 64579 = estimated reading
To
25 February 2008 = reading 64828 = estimated reading

25 February 2008 = reading 64828 = estimated reading
To
22 August 2008 = reading 67451 = estimated reading

22 August 2008 = reading 67451 = estimated reading
To
6 January 2009 = reading 69458 = accurate reading after meter has been removed

Meter Exchange new meter D06G663328

6 January 2009 = reading 16863 = new meter installed actual reading
To
31 March 2009 = reading 19915 = estimated reading

31 March 2009 = reading 19915 = estimated reading
To
7 May 2010 = reading 34523 = estimated reading

7 May 2010 = reading 34523 = estimated reading
to
8 June 2010 = reading 35686 = customer reading

8 June 2010 = reading 35686 = customer reading
To
6 July 2010 = reading 36540 = meter reader reading

So I've taken the actual readings and worked out the consumption from them and then calculated into an annual usage.

For the period 03/08/07 to 06/01/09 (with the old meter) they have had 18 months history and appear to have been pretty accurate with their estimates - about 500 to 550 kWh per month.

With the new meter installed, for period 06/01/09 to 31/03/09 they estimated it to be double - over 1000 kWh a month and in the following period 31/03/09 to 07/05/10 they were still estimating your consumption at 1,100 kWh a month.

I can't think why, with your previous history, they would double their estimate of your consumption - and amazingly estimate it very accurately(if the meter is to be believed.) and your subsequent accurate readings confirm approx 1,000kWh per month consumption.

Hi krdrummer - It's all very worrying
From your post you have attempted to switch away from Eon three times, but on each occasion have been frustrated. Unless you owed E.on big sums of money at these times there should have been no problem, so it would seem that there is some sort of mis-match in the industry's central records for your meter.

Apart from that you have a meter, which by your own readings is running at over 30 units a day and as previously posted by 'closed', running your own check on the meters accuracy is vital - Beg or borrow an electric fire/fan heater with a rating plate on the back of One or Two Kw - Switch off everything and check that the meter has stopped completely, If it has not check again that you have switched off everything, if you are certain everything is off but the meter is still active it's possible that that you have a wiring/appliance fault in your home and you should get a local sparks in to check the circuits

If the meter has stopped, switch on the heater for an hour - A 1kw rating will use 1 unit of power, and a 2kw rating wil use 2 units
If the meter records more than this, report it to the person you are dealing with by Email so that there is a written record
• BTW its not E.On's fault if the new meter is faulty they are owned by the Meter Operator I believe. However they do have to take an interest and get it sorted out or changed if there is a fault. If there has been no change in the appliances used and lifestyle at the address then it seems the meter could be faulty.

What concerns me is this thing about not being allowed to switch. dogshome is spot on the main reason for a change of supplier not to go through is if there is an outstanding balance owing. The only other thing that crops up sometimes is if the supply number or meter details are not right. If the meter details are mixed up with someone else-s it might explain the random nature of the bills. The best way to check this is to ensure they hold the same MSN that is on your meter.

Hello krdrummer,

I’m really sorry this has taken such a toll on you and your wife. I appreciate that this is not something you want to spend your time worrying about and I really hope it gets sorted soon.

I’ve manage to track down Elouise and have a look in to your account details. It looks like she is now doing something to try and get a resolution; however I don’t want to discuss the details in public without your consent.

If you’d like to talk to me regarding any of the issues please email in via the address on my contacts. I’m not a specialist with consumption queries like Elouise, but I will be able to discuss things with her and make sure we’re doing all we can do.

Thanks

• I haven't read all the replies and this may sound like a silly question but have you installed under floor heating by any chance? I only ask because a few years ago we had an electricity bill for £900 for just under 2 months usage. That was shortly after we had our meter changed. We played hell with Eon as we were convinced it was the new meter - but they claimed that there was nothing wrong with it.

The only other change was that we'd installed under floor heating - run off the electricity - and had kept it on the lowest setting as advised by the manufacturers. We didn't think it could be that as £900 is a hell of a lot - but we stopped using the heating and the usage went back to normal. Needless to say, we haven't touched the under floor heating since!!! I still wonder how on earth it used so much electricity.

2 years later, we're still paying towards the arrears caused by that one bill so our monthly DD is crippling us!
• And just one more thing I thought 'might' help. I'm probably completely off the mark but thought it could be a consideration.

At my old property we had a very similar address to a block of flats at the end of the road and we had the same postcode. After years living there, we discovered that we had been paying the gas bill for the flat and not our own address. What happened was, new people had moved into the flat giving their house number and postcode - which was the same as ours - there's just one extra word in their address that they failed to give. So the gas company set them up with our address and billed us for their gas usage. When I discovered it, they stopped charging me for the usage at the flat but I didn't know who was supplying the gas on my meter. I contacted Transco and gave serial numbers etc off the meter - they told me I was being supplied by British Gas. I went to British Gas but they said they were NOT supplying me. This went on for 3 years. I was using gas but British Gas couldn't identify that they were supplying us so we had free gas for about 3 years as they never sorted out the problem.

I'm just wondering if maybe your paying the leccy for someone elses property. I know it's a long shot, but maybe check that they're supplying you based on the correct serial number and identification details on the meter.

I really hope you get to the bottom of this soon. I know how stressful these things can be and trying to sort them out really takes its toll.

Emma
