I've been offered a 'guaranteed credit card' ...

  • Just this week, I have just been offered by Santander a Credit Card “guaranteed to be approved”.

Included is an acceptance form to be signed and returned (not an application form
asking about income, bank connections, how many years at current address etc).

There is no indication about the Credit limit, for all I know, it might be quite low.

    And again:
"Acceptance is guaranteed subject to routine fraud and anti money-laundering checks."

I've had a Halifax Current Account since February last year.

In September last year, I applied online for the Halifax One card for which I was declined.

Roll on March this year - Halifax ring me out of the blue saying I'm "guaranteed" for a Halifax One card. I was very suspicious of course and told the advisor I wasn't interested.

He said "but you're guaranteed, sir". I said "you mean, guaranteed subject to credit check, or guaranteed subject to something else, or guaranteed asterisk" and he said "no, you're guaranteed".

So I grudgingly said okay. But sure enough, by the end of the phone call, he said a new Halifax Credit Card was on the way to me. And sure enough, it turned up a week later.
You're spelling is effecting me so much. Im trying not to be phased by it but your all making me loose my mind on mass!! My head is loosing it's hair. I'm going to take myself off the electoral role like I should of done ages ago and move to the Caribean. I already brought my plane ticket, all be it a refundable 1.

If you have some form of credit account with them anyway (such a full current account with overdraft facility), then they will be reporting it to CRAs and getting a "feed" back from them, keeping them up to date with your credit position without needing to do a "new credit application" search. This feed is how CC companies get the information that leads to rate changes etc.
  • As others have said, there are some guaranteed casrds offered, but they always have the credit limit to play with. If you turn out to be a shiftless timewaster, they'll give you a £50 limit. And then close you down in a year if you don't buck your ideas up.

That may be the case with other institutions (or indeed for others with Halifax/BoS), but with all our Halifax cards (detailed above in post #10) we knew the limit before we signed the agreement...because it was available to view on their ECD screen in branch.

    Hi,

Has anyone applied for the Guaranteed card and then checked credit file to see if any search been made?

On my online banking it was "approval guaranteed" so I rang them and they confirmed credit card is guaranteed and then put me thorugh to another dept to make an app.

I have applied for the clerity one and conf rate of 12.9% with 4.5k credit limit. It made me think if they had searched my credit file as I do have good amount of credit available but they still offered me a card.

Well I decided to take them up on their offer, and despite justified scepticism my Clarity card turned up today, so there we have it, who'd have thought?

I will update here after I next check my credit file if no-one else has commented by then.
If you think of it as 'us' verses 'them', then it's probably your side that are the villains.

Just an update - couldn’t have gone smoother.

I signed the agreement (it wasn’t an application) and sent it back.
Santander must have received it by Monday last week (20th).
This Tuesday (28th), I did receive the PIN; yesterday the courier
wrote to arrange a delivery date and earlier today I received
the card with a pretty respectable limit of 3k.

So, quite a happy bunny here. :j
  • I had an offer from NatWest in July of this year for their MasterCard with the 0% balance transfer promotion. I, too, was wary of this and managed to chat online with an advisor who sadly couldn't tell me if I'd be accepted or not. So I took the risk and was luckily accepted.

I'd also previously banked with Halifax and they also gave me an 'offer' of their Halifax One MasterCard; and when I applied a while ago, they rejected me.

So it's a case of swings and roundabouts I guess.

I have a Santander zero card which I was guaranteed to be accepted for, as I had a current account with them, and they still did a full credit check as well as the fraud checks. Just because you are "guaranteed" a card, doesn't mean they won't do a credit check
Debt free and staying that way!
