in Credit cards
Hi All,
Im 19yo and would like a credit card. Im in full time employment and thought i would not struggle in gaining a card, however i was wrong First of all i applied online for a tesco credit card and was declined and then after a month or so applied online for a halifax card (as halifax is my bank) and was rejected.
Shooting myself in the foot as now i have 2 rejected applications:(.
i have got my experian report and it seems ok no negative payments but only my mobile bill showing:cool:.
How can i build credit history or obtain a card. Can i get store cards easy enough???
FYI my address has been the same for 6 years. Employed full time for 2 years. No convictions. No unpaid balances.
Any help would be much appreciated. :money:

Have you tried your current bank?0

You would be best getting a capital one or vanquis as they have cards designed for people with little credit history or bad credit. The limit you get will be very low £100-£200 i think and wont go up for a few months but i would not recommened anyone not paying these types of cards off in full each month as they come with very high apr rates, but using one of these basic cards for a about a year and paying off in full each month will help your credit rating and more likely accepted for a mainstream card such as tesco and halifax. Hope this helps:)Full Time Student

as marty has said, out of the two I would go for a progress capital one0

Thanks for the replies....
Lokolo - I've applied online with halifax which is my current bank, was rejected. Thanks for reply.:)
Would I be able to get a capital one or vanquis even though been rejected twice recently? Could i get both cards or would it be best to get one and build credit on that one?
I can afford to pay off any card i have so that is not a problem, i dont want the card to go on spending sprees, just to buy petrol or shop on and pay back monthly to build good credit history.
Also do score cards boost credit score? would i be likely to be rejected.
Thanks again and hope to see your replies.

Make sure you are on the electoral roll too

A friend in a similar situation to you was also declined by Tesco and also Virgin and their bank for a credit card. However was accepted for a Barclaycard initial. If it was me, I would agree with the previous posters and go for a Capital One Progress card.0 -

I take it you mean store cards? They will appear in the same category as credit cards on a credit report and will often have much less stringent acceptance criteria (and high APR). I expect you would get accepted for most store cards.0 -
Going by my personal experience, over a year ago, I applied for Capital One, Aqua and Vanquis all the same day. I got accepted for all 3. So maybe try a couple of applications on the same day. Not sure if it makes a difference or not, but maybe the search doesn't always register straight away for other companies to see.
However, I'd only recommend Capital One, but Aqua are OK. Vanquis would be strictly a last resort as they are such a pants company
Or else try for an account with the likes of Jacamo, Very, Next etc. They will give you lots of green 0's for paying on time :cool:0 -
digital phase:
What credit history did you have prior to applying and had you been declined elsewhere on better cards i.e tesco, virgin ?
 cheers for the reply.0 -
start off with easy cards like cap1 or vanqis maybe even try barclaycard inital (they have a pre application check which shows how likely you are to be accepted
It aint because of your age its just because you have little credit atm and tesco and halifax arent entry level cards they are inbetween sub and prime
trust me i know im 19 and full time employed now i have 3 cards / 2 mobile phones / overdraft / and 1k couch on 2 year intrest free
by god its been a intresting year lol:rotfl:OP pot £141.920 -
hey
i would say make sure your on electoral role firstly.
apply for vanquis/aqua/barclaycard initial...as i think cap1 require at least some history of credit which you dont have
also wait at least 3 months since your last application-maybe 6 if you can
store cards do help improve rating but i dont think as much as a cc. also you can only spend in one store by their very nature so over a year if you have a lot of zeros then doesnt look all that good.
shame about your own bank rejecting you-that was my first route in
tesco are pretty difficult to get-defo need a good history to get their cc
