Where to get Compaq recovery disks?

My pc is a Compaq presario SR1519UK, about 5 years old, and it is running very slowly. I've done all the steps to make it run faster to no avail, so want to re-install the OS (XP).

Now, according to the Compaq website, I should be able to write recovery disks from a partition on the hard drive, but even though I have followed all the steps, this partition doesn't seem to exist. And Compaq no longer has them for this model.

So, can anyone advise me on how to go about obtaining some recovery disks?

Also, am I right in thinking that, even if I can't get some recovery disks, I could use Windows XP and then download all the hardware drivers(mouse, keyboard etc.) from the Compaq site?

You might have a problem activating your copy of Windows XP, even if you have the key that is printed on your Certificate Of Authenticity.

Is the disc you are proposing to use Retail or OEM? Home or Pro? Do you even have a disc?

Installing the OS won't necessarily fix the problem. First of all before you go wiping the thing, when the fan comes on put your hand over the vent and see if you can feel a fairly reasonable breeze coming out of it. If there's only a slight one or just a feeling of hot air, you need it cleaning out. A blocked fan causes the CPU to overheat which in turn slows itself down to try and not fry.

Hi Hammyman, I would never have thought of that! Just checked and there is good air flow coming out, so it's not that.

I really need to get this probelm sorted asap, so if anyone has any ideas...

    Hi
Sometimes people on this forum have those discs.
Hold on, maybe you'll get lucky.

There seems to be a bit of a discrepancy. Did you say this was a Compaq Presario?
