One thing to watch for with cheddar gorge is the new parking policy. There are pay and display car parks all along the gorge road, but instead of machines next to each park, you are expected to walk down to the cave area and buy a ticket there. The trouble is that this is up to a 25 minute round trip walk to buy a ticket by which time there is a risk of being clamped for having no ticket!

The best things to do in Cheddar are the caves and gorge walk, but the walk takes at least 2 hours but has good views. http://www.pbase.com/boliston/image/76161417

If I visit Glastonbury tor I usually park on the tor side of the town and usually find free on-road parking as I have a policy of never using car parks where you have to pay (unless I'm desperate), but don't mind walking a few extra yards unlike most people!

Thanks boliston. Am staying at the Travelodge in Glastonbury Town the night before, so 'assuming' (will need to check) that can leave the car there and just walk - it says 0.1 mile to town and Tor on the website.

Thanks for the tip on the Gorge. There will be me, DH and kids so can leave him with the car and run down if necessary, but wouldn't have even thought of this if you hadn't mentioned it. Will be mid-week when most people will be at work / school, so hopefully not too busy.

We're big into picnics so intend to take our own if that's possible. The caves and the Gorge walk are what we're most into wanting to do, that and the 287 tower steps. Not fussed on the tat shops etc, although DD3 will be pleading to buy something rock like for her ever increasing supply of tourism tack that she hoardes with a passion.

Tucked into this wild few days is also Alton Towers (free tickets from Sun Promo for all of us) and the Eden Project (hopefully discount tickets using tip from on here). Am really excited.

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:We're staying in the Travelodge in Hayle as part of the £9 deal! Hoped there might be one there??? If not, I think we pass Newquay on the way down, and I definitely recall there being lots there!

Oooh we are staying in that one at half term f0r 4 nights. I believe it is right next to a Brewers fayre. Hayle also has a fab pasty shop, a great Chinese take away and i am sure a chippy. Have a great time and let me know what the travelodge is like!!

Wow - loving the sound of that!!

Okay, might stretch to the Chinese take-away then and save the chippy for Glasto!! The pasty shop sounds like an absolute must for buying our picnic for that day. Thanks for the tip! It sounds like you'll be there before we are, as we're not there until November. So likewise, any hints from your experience greatly appreciated.

Oh lord. Yes, Hayle's brilliant for food... I think there are 5 indians there and a chinese, pizza place - and, of course, chips. Not to mention two hot pasty companies. Mind you, that time of night, the pasty places will be shut.

You're still a bit geographically challenged for arriving late, getting chips, going to a beach though. Just trying to think... if I were in Hayle and wanting chips and a beach I don't know where I'd head for. Also, you have to watch chippies in case they close early, e.g. 9pm or so.

    Also, after 8pm ... it'll be dark :)

Good point Pastures New!! Hadn't really thought that bit out!!

Have just googled Hayle and there is (now, no shuddering anyone) a McDonalds if worst comes to the worst! The kids would love me - that would then be their second one this year - and I'll be sure to pack some Rennie's!!!
  • Just up the road from the Travelodge is a small village called Connor Downs. This has a garage/petrol station with a small chip shop at the back. The chips are amazing!! Visit Philps pasties in Hayle first, stop for chips, then drive a couple miles up the road to Gwithian beach to watch the sunset over Godrevy lighthouse. Our kids love doing this so highly recommended!!!

Got distracted earlier... missed this bit. There are chip shops in Newquay : http://hubpages.com/hub/Fish-and-Chips-Shops-in-Newquay

Although that's one heck of a detour for chips :)

We have stayed a few times at the Glastonbury travelodge ...I wouldn't actually say its located within glastonbury town as such.....Its located on a roundabout with a potrol station opposite, selling a small amount of pre packed food, underneath the travelodge there is a pizzaplace...dominos I think and also a subway sandwich shop...but neither of which opens that early in the day..subway about 8am...we have only used the travelodge to going into street and the shopping outlet so not walked the other direction towards glastonbury...but it takes about 15-20mins to walk to street and the hotel are absolutley fine about you leaving the car...theres usually loads of space in the car park....you might want take a picnic breakfast with you rather than rely on being able to buy something at the travelodge...they do the generic Travelodge breakfast in a box but nothing else...except the standard coffee/tea in room.
