How long to climb Glastonbury Tor

Am planning a wee Autumn getaway that is jam packed full of things, and quite fancied a 'run' up Glastonbury Tor.

How long does it take to climb (fairly fit)? Assuming starting in the town - going via. the well (have googled and seen this is the 'nicest' route), 5 minute stop at top, and back down again?

Also, as a ps if you're from the local area - are Cheddar Gorge and Stonehenge doable from here, and if yes, how long would you need at both of them?

Need to drive to Lands End that night, so would assume leaving the area at about 5 ish.

Thanks for any guidance

  • Not long it's not particularly high, 20mins at the most, you'll want to spend more than 5 minutes at the top though it's lovely up there!

Depends on the weather - there isn't much to do at the top!

Cheddar gorge stonhenge and glastonbury in one afternoon and then on to lands end....thats a lot to pack in...too much in my opinion..I think I would possibly just pick one...although which one im not sure...been to all 3 and all quite different..cheddar is the most touristy...glastonbury a great view and stanehenge well thats just stonehenge...not sure I could spend a whole afternoon at any of them but wanting to do all 3 in an afternoon might be a little ambitious...

  • If you have to miss any out I would opt for Stonehenge. Found it really dull sorry! Glastonbury village is worth a visit as well as the Tor. x

Thanks everyone for the hints and tips. I'm a very early riser (and subsequently that means my poor family are also dragged out at pre-day break!!) so was planning to do the Tor at sunrise-ish, as it's so quick can then move onto Cheddar Gorge at about 10 - over to Stonehenge at about 2 / 3 ish and then head down to Lands End at about 4, arriving for 20:30 traffic dependent, just in time for chips on the beach.

Shops aren't really my thing, although do like stopping for the odd coffee here and there if possible (will fill the flask from the hotel in the morning).

Have looked up discounts for Cheddar Gorge and not much going (have got National Trust for Stonehenge and Tor), unless anyone can point me in the right direction?

    Thanks so much again
  • Stonehenge is English Heritage not National Trust.
Not sure if there is a charge to walk Glastonbury Tor- its a long time since Ive been.
I think we only paid to get into the Abbey but dont quote me on that.

Stonehenge is EH, but there is some sort of link to NT - not sure what as we've not been there for a very long time!
Don't think there is a charge for the Tor, but you will have to pay for parking.
I googled Cheddar recently and thought it very expensive - I just wanted to walk the steps, but it would appear that you have to pay to do everything there (unless I was being very dense and didn't find the correct bit of the website!)

You won't get chips at Lands End, there's nothing there.

    Flaw in the plan.

Land's End is just that ... end of the Land. Big, high cliffs ... peer over and it's scarey rocks below. End of.

I went to Cheddar. There are a few tacky shops and to do "stuff" you do have to pay. Only free thing seemed to be driving along the Gorge - but that's a bit dull and if you're the one driving you can't see much. You could theoretically walk along the road, but it is narrow and you run the risk of drivers not looking/seeing you.

OP - check out Wooky Hole, which is round the corner from Cheddar Gorge. Have to pay to get in that too, but there are tables at the car park where you could have a picnic lunch (very MSE).

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:We're staying in the Travelodge in Hayle as part of the £9 deal! Hoped there might be one there??? If not, I think we pass Newquay on the way down, and I definitely recall there being lots there!
