We are confused!

Hi All,

First time poster so not sure if this is the right forum or if I used be using the Gas and Electricity one...

Anyway, we had some serious problems with our old storage heaters over the winter which left our house in need of a complete redeocration (black soot EVERYWHERE, curtains, walls, doors, windows, blinds you name it, it was stained). So we had them removed at the end of spring/beginning of summer and we had some electric convection heaters put in yesterday to replace them.

This is where it begins to get complicated. The Electrician who put them in said they wouldn't work on Economy 7 (we used to be on NPower Eco 10 I think, but have recently switched to E.ON Eco 7). I know for a fact that the heaters are on a different fuse box to the rest of the stuff in the house and the old storage heaters only came on between 12 and 7 (or something like that).

So, I rang E.ON last night to change tariff (got through to a very helpful man named Pete actually, great customer service from him) who changed us over to the Track and Save tariff and he said that it was effective immediately... But this morning the Heaters will still not switch on after 7am. I can't find an Economy 7 timer anywhere in the house. Do I need to do anything other than change the tariff?

What do I do??

Jamm :(

Most storage heaters are on a separate electrical circuit that only becomes 'live' during Economy 7 hours.

EON switching you to a normal 24/7 tariff will just mean that the readings on both meters are added together and you are charged all at the same rate. e.g. 1000kWh on night and 3000kWh on day is treated as 4,000kWh. They will not have altered the house electrical circuits.

The electrician needs to rewire the house circuitry so the supply to your new heaters is available 24/7. I assume you can switch the heaters on and off?

I would seriously question the competency of a electrician who quoted to install your new heaters without allowing for the necessary reconnections at the CU. Did he think you just wanted to use them as wall decorations?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Oh fudge :(

Does anyone know of typical costs for rewiring the circuits?
  • You could try asking E.ON to change the meter to a "normal" single rate meter and during the changeover, the engineer can make both fuse boards live 24/7.
They may do it free of charge. But make it absolutely clear that is what you want.
I know from personal experience they will do it, as long as the meter box is convenient to work in.
  • Thanks for the info.

    I'll give them a call this evening!
