If somebody owed you money, and they paid you back, and then they said theres been a mistake and i didnt meant to pay you, can I have it back. Would you give it back, of course you wouldnt,

The upside is that you owe £50 less than yo did before.

Lesson in life - never assume anything.

Erm the person owing the bank money didn't pay them back though did they, it's a 3rd party, so your example is way off.

Thats correct if the account number and sort code exist.

If they dont exsist then one of two things could happen it could automatically be returned or sit in the banks suspense account until its claimed.

If its done in error the bank can make attempts to claim the money back however its a long drawn out process.

From what I have read, it's not completely impossible no, but very difficult, time consuming and ulikely.

In this instance both the payer and payee know each other so theoretically it should be much easier.

Ok, so turning it on its head - could the OP not ask their bank directly to refund the payment, passing along written confirmation from Mum stating the payment was made in error? I agree unlikely but is this not worth a try? If I really needed the £50, I'd try everything I could think of..

Hmmm....don't see why not. Could try writing a letter stating the amount of the credit, date and time etc and say it was made in error and request that it's returned to the sender. If you make out that you don't know the sender or the details of the sending account then it might just work..

Wont be a quick process though...

There are two ways of getting the money back:

    1) If the money goes by BACS (not FP), and you request that it's reversed early enough in the BACS cycle; or
    2) Writing a nice letter to the account holder c/o their bank and hoping that they send you the money back.

On the plus side though, the chances of money going to an incorrect account are very slim (I believe there's about a 2% chance of a random account number being valid).

Here the account holder and payee know each other so should be pretty workable imho..

  • Ring Santander up and explain the situation, they may be able to transfer the money back out if you're up-to-date on your plan.
