Help

My mum owed me £50 for the plumber I'd paid and a few other things so she transferred the money over to me, I not forward thinking assumed she would transfer to the account that I've been transferring money over to her for the last 3 months, instead she transferred it to my Abbey account as oppose to my alliance and leicester account, the only issue with this is that account is overdrawn which I'm on a plan for so obviously the banks just swallowed up that £50.

Normally it'd not be a major issue but it is because I'm out of work and that £50 is needed, especially needed as I was relying on it for travel costs to an interview later on today :(

Have I lost this money or can my mum contact her bank and get it back. She is with Lloyds TSB and living abroad making contacting banks even harder.

Thanks

    It's gone.
  • Yeah, I'm afraid if you're on a plan then you won't be getting that back. You should never assume anything

If somebody owed you money, and they paid you back, and then they said theres been a mistake and i didnt meant to pay you, can I have it back. Would you give it back, of course you wouldnt,

The upside is that you owe £50 less than yo did before.

Lesson in life - never assume anything.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • I have no idea if this would work at all, but could your Mum contact her bank and say she'd made the payment in error, ask them to run a trace and request it returned?

    Worth a shot I suppose.

If the payment was sent via Faster Payment they wouldnt be able to request its return.

Im presuming the OPs mother has a UK bank account.

Why not, just out of interest?

    Thanks,

Faster payments are instant unlike BACS it takes 3-5 working days to hit the recipients account giving the sending bank time to recall the payment before it hits the account.

I must say this is the downside of faster payments once its gone it gone.

I'd say it's an upside, if someone wants to make a "soft" payment, there are still many means of doing so, but in instances where the beneficiary/seller doesn't trust the other party, the finality of a faster payment is perfect.

This wouldn't work - the sending bank will say that a payment made in error to the wrong sort code and account number will be the responsibility of the person who received it (in error) to return. So back to square one

Ok, so turning it on its head - could the OP not ask their bank directly to refund the payment, passing along written confirmation from Mum stating the payment was made in error? I agree unlikely but is this not worth a try? If I really needed the £50, I'd try everything I could think of..
