  • I have virtually no MP3's anymore and just use spotify for everything

  • I had 2TB of music on x4 260 caddys a decade ago, non of it is <rhymes with kite>. Different strokes don't ya know.

    Different people / preference

    - mp3's
    - flac
    - lossless
    - collections, and
    - completeists

Music, as you grow older the sound in your ears is equalled with the images and even the smells invoked in your brain when a track is played. When Rosemary Clooney, Edmund Hockeridge, , Dickie Valentine, Beverley Sisters. David Whitfield are played I can see the buildings, know the date [ish] and even remember her name. When I lived round the corner from ' Sloane Square ' they replaced some whelk & eel stalls with an early burger brand called .. .. .. can't remember .. .. .. think it was Wimpey Bar, my brain still remembers that combination mix of the beatles / cigarette smoke / greasy burgers & coffee. Individuals have different reasons for making and maintaining collections.

Photographs are the same, irreplaceable, box brownie through the 40's SLR through the 60's, Rolleiflex and my beloved Mamiya TLR's in the 70's & 80's.

Can't remember a crash since early XP & SIS chipsets, BTW still have the plastic, mine all mine. When me toes curl, If they have sense they'll put it on ebay and buy a house from the proceeds, but it'll go in bin liners and the bin men will moan about the weight - waste ! Oh what a waste !

OP You said the backup failed no other backup where is the original then ?

Anyway have you heard of Spinrite ? Steve Gibsons hard drive recovery and maintenance software ? Give it a try.

No such original exists - digital cameras, emailed docs...

And no Spinrite won't work. It requires the drive to be actually capable of reading data on it - its not a software error on this drive or I'd have fixed it by now. :D

In fact the hard drive is so old that when I phoned up the data recovery company I use, I was asked if it was out of a CNC milling machine and was gobsmacked it was from a desktop.

    haha

I can believe that. Ive seen cnc machines with hardrives smaller than 3 gig, one even had just a few Mbs in (Think it was a prototype approx 20 years old)

Scary thing is that even today some of these CNC machines that cost millions have hardrives smaller than 10Gb

My first PC (after the Amiga) had a 20MB (or was it 40?) hard disk.

    good ol' times :D
  • I heard a good saying: "there's two types of people, those who backup and those who have never experienced a hard drive failure"

I should say I backup every week, but I dont and its manual as my machine isnt on 24/7, if it were then id use a overnight script to backup. NAS drives are quite cheap now and support FTP or Windows File sharing so good for most folks I would think

So in fact, there is no backup at all, just the one disc which held the data that is now kaput.

So if HD drives can fail arbitrarily, CDs and DVDs are susceptible to degredation and online backup is only as reliable as someone elses HD, what is the best way to back up?

Oh, while we're on the subject, can anyone recommend a really simple backup program that I can set to backup my parent's computer to an external HD overnight?
