Car hire Miami

Can anybody tell me the rules regarding toll roads in Florida? We are going to hire a car to visit the Everglades and Florida Keys i am going to avoid if possible all toll roads but i heard that the car hire places give a hard sell trying to get you to purchase a prepay option, is there an option should i find myself on a toll road to pay by cash or is it all done by a system similiar to the congestion charge in London

I've driven from Miami airport going north on I-95 and just paid cash for a bit of toll road.

The rental car may have a transponder fitted, but at the toll plaza there is always the option of going through a cash booth. It may have instructions to put the transponder in a metal shielding box, depending on the type. I assume the box is perhaps in the glove box.

Though recently in California the extra cost of using the autopay system was only, I think, an extra 2.5 dollars a day, with a maximum of 10 dollars per month. (That was with Hertz in California)

  • I wouldnt worry to much about the toll roads, weve never had the hard sell on getting a "sunpass" which is the automatic way of paying the toll charge through the fast lane and have always gone with (pay as you go). Toll charges are around $1 - $1.50 and you just drive up to the maned kiosk and pay your $'s up goes the barrier and away you go.

If you go down the Keys dont forget to stop off at "Robbies" and feed the Tarpon its the best $3 you'll spend. Also Shark Valley tram tour in the Everglades along the Tamiami Trail.
My mind tends to wander............If found please return;)

    I can spell...................I just cant type:confused:
