So Excited Got Half an Allotment
Hi everyone
Got a letter today from the council being offered half an allotment on a side nice an close to home so excited :j
Now I need all you lovely MSE's to help me get started I have grown veg in the garden but mostly tomatoes lettuce carrots but with mixed results as most of its been done in pots. I have never started to grow anything at this time of year.
I know I may be walking into a mess and it may take me ages to sort it out but I would love to have something for my christmas table not even sure if thats possible??
All donations of advise gratefully recieved.
Thanks

I remember when we got our first plot it's a wonderful feeling.
My only advice is don't try to do everything at once, take it steady.
"You can't eat an elephant in one sitting ! Little bites"
Make friends and ask questions and watch what everyone else's doing.
sorry that's 2 bits of advice and here's the 3rd....ENJOY !!!!:beer:0 -
Huge Congrats to you - I've had my Allotment since last December and I remember how pleased I was. I've still only managed to get about 2 thirds planted up as there was a lot of digging over and clearing to do and I'm just clearing the final bit over the next few weeks so that the whole Plot will be ready for Spring.
Take your time and enjoy.:D"WASTE NOT, WANT NOT!"GC for OH, myself, DD18 & DD16 includes Toiletries, cleaning stuff & Food.

Hi Sare,
Congratulations on getting your allotment. We got ours early June. We have managed to get loads of courgettes, cabbages, beetroot plus have got our strawberries in (managed one bowl of strawberries from these this year).
One thing you might be able to get into the ground now for Christmas is some potatoes. These will help break up the ground as well. I have found some available here. There are other suppliers around also.
You can also sow spring cabbage, broad beans and peas now but they won't be ready until spring-time.
Other options are lettuce, chinese green leaves such as bok choi and spring onions. You will need to cloche these though to protect from the cold nights.
October, you can plant onion setts and garlic for next year and bare rooted fruit trees and bushes during winter.

Congrats....
I have one as well now.. and I am thinking of just covering it over with poly and compost/manure so it is fully ready for next year..
We are due to VERY cold winter again and, personally, feel that If I plant anything in the allotment it will not last..
So I am preparing it ready...
digging it over.. planning what to go where.. clearing..building...
Would all be good if I could get down there....
working long hours atm...
but keep yourself going.. allotments are like gold mines!!!

I'd hesitate to go for potatoes at this time of year in open ground. I tried it once and the frost got them. They really should be in pots so that they can be brought under cover once frosts start. It's also slightly too late for spuds - they should be started in August to maximise the growing period before temperatures and day length drop too much.
TBH I'd agree with Bullau's post.0 -
Ref potatoes. You are right, the frost does kill the plant growth which you then remove carefully at ground level, but if you get them in early enough, they create the tubers and the tubers continue growing underground until you harvest them.

I been waiting for 15 months now and still no sign. How long did you wait?0

I waited 2 years for my allotment. Then two offers came up within a week of each other! It is worth phoning and finding out where you are on the list.

Well done, go slowly, and only work on one bed at a time.
I got my 1/2 allotment in May/June time. I split this into different sections, covered up the ones not in use, and worked on one bed at a time. If you go to B&Q or other garden centres you may find some autumn/winter plants - kale, spring cabbage etc that you can put in now.
Get the seed catalogues so that you can plan for the spring.
The best advice I can give is, you will have successes and failures - enjoy the successes, see if you can find why you have failures, and what you can try next time to turn them into successes.0
