If you are on the DFDS 3 day mini cruise to Bergen...you dont get much time on land.

You will arrive there around 10pm at night, and leave again at around 11am the following morning. The ferry crossing itself takes over 24 hours each way.

havent been on a "free" trip, but went with DFDS from Newcastle to Bergen a while ago...

leave Newcastle on Tuesday at 7pm...arrive Bergen Wednesday 10pm...its a 24 hr or so crossing, if the weather is ok.

leave Bergen Thursday 11am...and arrive back in Newcastle Friday about 1pm...

only a few hours in Bergen, but 3 nights on board the ship.
  • No,the times have been changed now.We went in November.
    Leave tues 8pm(although we left at midnight)Arrive Bergen 10 pm(We arrived 2am!
Then leave Bergen 5pm next day for an arrival in theory in Newcastle 7pm next day(we arrived 10 pm)
At least if you are late on way out it doesnt make much difference as you would be too late to disembark that night anyway.
Just get up early next day and enjoy all you can.
Don't book timed train tickets or the like on arrival back in Newcastle though, the ship is routinely late.
Book a hotel for the night,Royal quays premier travel inn at port entrance for example, although someone said the staff will let you keep the cabin for the extra night at no charge, but don't quote me on it.
We were glad to get off, cabins are tiny!

actually, if you check the timetables on DFDS site...most of the return sailing time from Bergen to Newcastle in Jan and Feb 2007 is at 10.00 am, arriving back in Newcastle the following day at 1.30pm..

the only 5pm returns are on 11th Jan, 18th Jan, 8th Feb, 15th Feb.

so it depends which day you go, to get longer to look round Bergen
