my travel expenses will stay the same as now. it is the same zone, just from one side of london to another :-)
renting closer to work is not an option for me.

Sorry, didnt realise it was Tube not driving - Tube i think i could do a bit easier, would there ever be an option for you to work through lunch to leave early or arrive late etc? Just because that can mike life a lot more pleasant :)

Still recommend a travel mug though lol

My OH commutes every week from South Wales to London. His work pay for his petrol and pay for him to stay overnight for the days he's working there but it's a nightmare! If you're going to do it make sure it's a job you love rather than one that's just to pay the bills.

    **EDIT

I should add that I love my drive to work. Only 45 mins but it's 45 mins of singing my lungs out with the radio on nice and loud :)

Lol, i am most days - where there is a will there is a way - i would ask what is the worst possible scenario - can you cope with that and how would you fix it

if you have all the answers (or maybe just most of them) go for it!!!

Question is can you cope with potentialy standing in peak times on the tube for at least half your commute in each direction, for that is what you face if your changing lines in the centre of London on each journey?
  • Yes.
I have had two jobs involving long commutes.
A 150 mile round trip and a 100 mile round trip.
I did the 150 mile trip for four years - yesterday I said on another post it was seven years but was mistaken.
I did the 100 mile round trip for two years.
The jobs enabled me to expand my experience and move up in my career.
Initially, the commute is hard but organise yourself to accept the constraints and keep the long term gain in mind.
I agree about keeping a snack with you. I ate a banana when I set off home.

Personally, I wouldn't, not now, but in my youff I used to.

DH had a short time of long commutes, and didn't cope well with it at all.

It's a longer commute, but how will it compare? will the tubes be more or less crowded? If you'll always get a seat it could be quite pleasant. If you'll be strap hanging for an extra hour a day, yuck!

If you can adjust your hours to fit in with the 'best' tube times, that would be helpful. But if it's absolutely critical you're there for the exact hours they need, life could be 'interesting'.

Another thing to explore would be alternative commuting routes: could you cycle somewhere and get a train, or anything like that?

Id only o it if the pay equaled the travelling time,
  • I would.

12 months ago I went from a 30 min drive each way commute doing a job I had once loved but grown to hate, to a nearly 2 hour commute doing a job I now really enjoy (most of the time! - nothing's perfect after all!).

What does make it easier for me is that I now go by train and often have a snooze on the way. I've only once stayed asleep past my stop! lol (set my alarm on my phone nowadays just in case!)
Are the words 'I have a cunning plan' marching with ill-deserved confidence in the direction of this conversation?

Would it be quicker to travel by scooter? I may be quicker.

If the job is what you want and you feel you will be happy then I would personally go for it.

I know people that commute over 80 miles each way, every day, and also do 12 hour shifts, they are happy to do it, but the difference is that they have moved out to areas of cheaper housing so there as more involved than just a longer commute.

Buy an iPod and relax on the train, an extra 30 minutes means the chance to wind down a bit more after the working day.
