Would you consider 1.45h commute?

Hi,

I am considering applying to a job which will make my coomute much longer than the current one. It will be 1.45h daily commute. But the job seems right. Would you take the chance?
I am afraid I will hate every minute of my day because of commute.

  • Is that each way or total daily travel time?

    each way :(
  • For me it would really depend on the job and the salary. My husband used to work at a job firstly with a 2 and a half hour each way commute (until he got digs for during the week) and then a 1 and a half hour each way commute. It really affected our quality of life as his travelling time added to working time vastly reduced any time we had together, he was always tired from the travelling and if anything happened at work which meant he had to work late or go in early it was even worse. The £20k salary definitely did not make it worthwhile.

I did it as a student on placement. Through the winter. Knowing that it was only for x number of months got me through.

But if it was for a dream job with a mega salary, I'd consider it. ;)

I currently do 30 mins in each direction and that is more than enough. After the grotty weather last winter I'm dreading the cold weather. :(

The salary is not mega. It is more than my current job, but not too high. Average for industry. But the job spec seems like something I would enjoy.
Also, my current commute is 1.15 min. so it will add 30 min
  • It really depends on what he wants to do.

1hr 45 minutes daily is only worth it, if he can cope with this problem. Does the money significantly cover the travelling expenses?

Everyone is different. I sometimes have to travel 3 hours to customers and sometimes even takes me a whole day. This reduces the amount of family time. But my situation is much different from the above.

1 hour is just about manageable for a standard job. Anything more? Then the likelihood you would rent a place near work. I think you get the drift.

PS. Everyone is different. IF you dont try it, you don't know.

my travel expenses will stay the same as now. it is the same zone, just from one side of london to another :-)
renting closer to work is not an option for me.

Train maybe; tube or driving definitely no.
  • I moved to be with OH and am currently a daily 2 hour commute each way - i break it up by staying with relatives who are an hour commute away and that helps.

TBH - its killing me, been doing it since May and i love my job, my mates and everything about my work - just wish i could be a bit closer, but life is better in general here with OH so im working from home whenever i can and staying put til February (dont ask, its the planned date for everything it seems)

if i dont get more concrete work from home time im really going to go loopy over the winter!

I would say drive it for a week every day and then see what happens (if you can do it before you take the job then ace) if you know its on a "didgy" route (i.e. m25 at rush hour) then see what you can do on A roads to make the drive more interesting and if possible less time.

Oh, and invest in a travel Mug :D I have 3 (luckily all free samples) but a cuppa for that long a journey is a welcome refreshment - ooh, and keep a "stash" of food in the car, just ceral bars or something to stop you calling into the services ;)
