Need to buy a Washing Machine - how many RPM would you recommend?

  • Sorry for late update - been off teaching mrbadexample how to make a pie  .

I was going to say that I'd spoken to DH, who said don't buy a Miele - long lasting machines, yes (and they are all Mieles) but they do go wrong. They are repairable but the charges are astronomical, and you are tied in to Miele as no other engineers can get the parts.
I don't know whether DH is a engineer or not, but you are completely correct in that Miele is made by Miele, and serviced by Miele. As a lot of their models come with 5 or 10 year guarantees, I don't see why you would require parts. Unfortunately all manufacturers have appliances that breakdown, some have more than others.
However, I'm a bit worried about buying Bosch as Bosch are DEFINITELY made by other people. (When I asked DH if other people made Miele, he said 'no, the Mieles are made by Miele. You're thinking of Bosch')
Bosch are part of the BSH group (Bosch Siemens Neff), the group do intermake appliances for each other and will purchase outside of the group for products they are not specialised in making. Example, Microwaves are made by Panasonic, because Panasonic make the best microwaves on the market.
His recommendation would be to buy an Indesit and replace it if necessary after the warranty period (you can get 5 years with John Lewis).
Indesit group now includes Ariston(no longer available in the UK), and Hotpoint who were bought out because their service backup was so good, where Indesits was crap. As a result the service of Indesit/Hotpoint is now crap also, because as a manufacturer they statistically have more appliances go wrong so have to do more service calls!!
Quick buying comparison, quick check on Kelkoo, found Miele 1400 spin model for £699 with 10 year guarantee. Buy a equivalent Indesit with extended guarantee is £249 + £129 for 5 Years, times this by 2, you get £756. Therefore the Miele is not only cheaper but a superior product to boot, no contest....

Sorry to be a downer. I thought I would update as it sounds as if your suppliers are being thick, so if you decide to cancel because they can't cope, you've had my tuppenceworth! :o

Good luck with Purchase Mookybargirl, budget is always a problem, I have bought cheap in the past but it never pays. We now have a young daughter 17 months, and need the washing machine to be on 10-15 times a week, I now appreciate that buying cheap will be expensive long term, but I do understand sometimes there is no alternative.
(my average change on washing machines in past has been every 2 years, with cheap models, now 5 years into Miele and going strong, and boy are they quiet.)
    I had a plan..........its here somewhere.
  • There will always be a bad miele that last less than 20 years and a good hotpoint that lasts over 5. You can only go on the law of averages and what generally happens.
Repair shops have an interest in you buying unreliable makes such as hotpoint. Just look at how many hotpoint spares are in the shop! The repair industry wouldn't exist if everyone had a miele and their are few engineers that have even seen one!
Cheap flashy looking makes with gadgets are false economy and more expensive in the long run. I personally don't want the bother of buying 4 cheap machines over 25 years, having the repair man out etc. It's a right pain when your machine breaks. Save your money, buy a miele or learn the hard way!
    Cash ISA rate 6.5% fixed for 2 years. Mortgage rate 0.75% = 5.75% profit on £75K = £4500 per year:j
Mortgages make money. Definitely don't wanabee mortgage free!

    ......................

I can remember us in the same situation
not once but at least three times within
a time span of six years, three machines
taken to the scrap heap through over use.

with a family and at the time full time
carer for my disabled mum.We get washing like
    nothing else.

forget after sale deals if we went two
days without a machine we would be in
    serious trouble wash wise,launderettes
cost a fortune as an emergancy stand in
while you await repair men, spare parts etc.

I was getting served in John Lewis buying
stuff for the hoover knowing we were on
the verge of yet another break down.
I asked the lady which was the most
    reliable machine they sold,before she
had a chance to answer virtualy
everyone in the queue behind me said
`get a Miele` .They all seemed to have
one even one lady who bought hers
    secondhand from the Persil factory,saying
it was 11 years old when she got it and
had owned it herself and used it daily
for 23 years ? They all were in agreement
that you never have a repair man in your home
reckoning that they are good for at least
20+ years use if not more.this got me thinking
so I saved up bought one and have not looked
back, that was nearly 5 years ago and it still works
like a new machine and some days I am doing
anything between 5 to 8 washes a day.

My machine looked old fashioned when it was new
but its turned out to be very reliable, washes everything
really well.On reflection it was one of the best
purchases I have made.I would pick reliabilty
    over features any day.
Mines triple AAA rating has a 30 min wash with a good
spin.Various programs, plus and this is something I never
thought I would use it has a timer on it.when ever
I am doing one of the longer washes I set it to finish
the wash in time for when we get up in the morning.

One last big plus for this,we live in a ground floor flat
and my neighbours used to complain about the noise
of constant washing going on,this machine is totaly
silent when its washing, the only noise it makes is the
final spin and that seems to go unnoticed by the
neighbours. So if your in a semi or a flat this would
be a big plus if your neighbours have been complaining.

If you shop around you can get these at a reasonable
price.we are a low income family so this was a
big purchase for us,but so far we have saved a
    fortune

I know its easy to give what you own a good
review, but this is definatly a good reliable buy
that I know you would never regret.
I always make a point of being the first to mention
if I have made a bad buy
    .................................

We save loads on the electric,
as we are tumble drying most things
    in the winter months.
  • We replaced our broken 3-year-old Indesit with a Miele washer/dryer (no room for separates in my house!) and I will never go back to the cheap ones! W/Ds are notoriously rubbish but this one washes really well (got age-old stains out on the first wash...the Indesit hadn't touched them for years) and dries everything bone-dry and fluffy. And, yes, it's so quiet! The old one, you could hear in space when it was spinning.

Looks-wise it's a bit old-fashioned but we went into Currys today for something, and when we walked past the washers we noticed how flimsy they looked compared to our Miele. It was a real MSE-style bargain too! Reduced from £900 to £650 because it was ex-display. But it would have been worth paying full price for.
