I thoroughly recommend everyone to get VLC mdia player from https://www.videolan.org
It is the most versatile media player out there.
I see a lot of people suggesting media player this, and BS player that. FORGET THEM!
You will always need to find a codec for some format of program which they cannot play. They are a pain to get rid of...and they install millions of programs and codec files.
IMHO VLC media player is the best player out there. It will play virtually anything! Plus its a small file and not a resource hog as some of the other media players out there. Ask the people who already use it and they will tell you it is very good for playing just about any format of video and audio file on the net. Plus they have a decent FAQ section forum if you have any problems with the program.
Ditch the windows media player and go with this. It will take a bit of getting used to but trust me it will be worth it.
People should even have my children for this! :rotfl: (I have removed my gazillion thanks saying as it seems it "offends" some people! Well you cant please them all

I wouldn't say VLC was that good myself. It gave dreadful quality when I played my DVD's through my projector using this player.
Oh and by the way, why do you think you should recieve "a gazzillion thanks".
Seems strange that I read another post on here today with someone asking to be thanked for something they had posted.
If someone finds your info useful and feels like thanking you then I am sure they will but don't go expecting or asking to be thanked for posting."Gort, klaatu barada nikto"

Maybe if you saw the little smiley man at the end of the line you may just realise I was joking! Lighten up!
Also the point of my post is, if you have problems trying to play certain files in your current media player then try VLC media player as it is very good at playing all types of files.
Lastly I think it is common sense that you will lose some quality if you are playing something on a projector because it all depends on the quality of your projector and what quality your pc/laptop can output. Maybe you should check them out?

I'm not being funny, but even your signature is telling people to press the thanks button and you say its just a joke!
And please don't suggest that I should check my PC/laptop or projector for their quality, as I play my DVD's with winDVD and they are superb quality.
I was just stating my belief that VLC wasn't 'in my opinion' that great or is nobody allowed to disagree with you?"Gort, klaatu barada nikto"

you stated your opinion but you then went on to have a pop at me saying i in a way "demand" people to thank me for the help i give which I find insulting because you dont even know me to even judge me! Maybe now I'm not allowed to defend myself because what you say is right!
Maybe next time you hold the door open for me I'll think about thanking you because it obviously isnt good manners and courteous for people to thank each other for doing favours.
As for my signature its a reminder for everyone to thank each other for any help they get. I've been brought up to say please and thank you, nothing wrong with trying to preach this.
So please get off my back because I have thanked numerous people who helped me and I dont think you have the right to judge me about my manners since you dont know me.
If you feel the need to respond to this then be my guest but for me what was supposed to be a helpful post for people has turned into a slanging match and I am finished with this.
Good day

Nice bit of editing on your original post by the way.
Now please take note of the following points.
1.I was simply stating my experience having used that piece of software.
2. I was asking you why you thought you should be thanked for informing us of your opinion on the above mentioned software."Gort, klaatu barada nikto"

I apologize if I have upset you Abs, but I was interested to know why you thought you should be thanked for your original post.
I don't think I 'had a pop' at you as you seem to think nor did I say or infer you were 'demanding' that people thank you.
I too was brought up to say 'please and thankyou' and bring my own children up the same way. I will gladly hold a door open for anyone(including you) but I don't expect everyone that I hold the door open for to say thankyou, if they do that's fine if they don't it's no skin off my nose.
I was never on your back as you seem to think, and you are right I don't have the right to judge you on your manners but at what point did I do that.
I will say again, all I did was state my opinion and ask you a question, you are the one who has turned this into a 'slanging match'."Gort, klaatu barada nikto"

raptorman - how do you play dvds on vlc player. I was just about buy power dvd to play dvds as I didn't realise it was possible on vlc.0

I don't want to get into this 'thank you' argument you guys are wading into but I have to agree with abdulinyourface. VLC is the best player I have ever used. It lacks all the bells & whistles of other players but it really does use very little resources and can play any type of video file(or at least that I have tried). Also another big plus I have found is that it can even play some broken video files.0

Actually thor, I have found that if you get under the hood of vlc player, it probably has many more bells and whistles than most media players out there. Play around with it and you might be surprised.
It may not have the most snazzy user interface, but I agree that it is probably the best media program available.0 -

What it can play largely depends upon the codecs you have installed. And I have to agree with raptor, on some dvd's I've watched the quality hasn't been the best.
Aside from that though it's still a very good media player, one of the best out there. I personally use Windows Media Player as it plays everything I need it to. And it's not necessarily more of a resource hog. You'll generally find VLC uses more memory but much less cpu, where WMP is the other way round.
If you're happy with WMP, then switching to VLC won't make a huge difference.
Another player worth checking out is Media Player Classic:
