Carphone Warehouse requires £xx Deposit!

I recently placed a new mobile phone order (pay monthly) on Carphone Warehouse and have received an email from them asking for a deposit before they can process the order.

How it says the amount is for: "£XX"

It says as long as I have paid my bills on time I will get this deposit back within 12 months. I don't have any problem paying a deposit however does anyone know roughly how much they would want? Don't wanna call them up if they ask for a ridiculous large depost. Anybody else had to pay a deposit?? :(

  • Most people do not have to pay a deposit why do you have to pay a deposit ?

I have very little credit history in the UK so my credit score is low.

It says after checking Equifax I will need to pay a deposit but doesn't say how much. Have emailed them to ask but was interested if anyone on here has had this and how much deposit they had to pay the network?

Okay. I think that the deposit can vary with different networks if you do not want to pay a deposit try three network because they take people with poor or adverse credit.

Its not the best network but you can use it to start your credit history and move on to a better network when your contact ends.
  • One of the people I order for had this a couple of years ago. They wanted 6 months' worth as a deposit on a 12 month contract. They did get that back of course. It's the network that calls for it, not the dealer. Until you call and ask you won't know how much; if it's too much there's no harm in saying no so no reason not to call.

When my daughter moved into a brand new flat last year, she had very little credit history, and as it was a new property , O2 (via Phones4U) asked for £100 deposit, which was refunded after 3 months, or knocked off the first few bills after that.
  • Offer them £5 - they quite happily take the P*ss out of us!
I am NOT a mortgage & insurance adviser - or anything to do with finance, that was put on by the new system I dont know why?!
  • Update: Well I just rang them up and they want a £150 deposit. The tariff I signed for is only a tenner per month (with basic phone) so I feel this is quite expensive. :(

Surely putting a call cap limit on my sim would be much wiser. I could understand maybe £60 deposit (6 months upfront) but for this amount I could buy a Blackberry on Pay&Go. I know they say i'd get the deposit back within 12 months but feels like this is a bit too expensive.

Having said that if I want to get on the "Credit Contract" ladder then maybe I should pay the deposit and join. What does everyone think I should do?? Confused....
  • Go to Three first and see what they will offer you.
In the beginning, the universe was created. This made a lot of people very angry and was widely regarded as a bad move.

Thanks. Do you recommend a certain tarrif for someone like me?

Yeah I think I'll tell Carphone to stick their offer where the sun don't shine. OK so I have little credit history but thats why I applied for a basic tarrif/phone in the first place. It was on their own network too (TalkMobile) and I feel their being unreasonable when they could just cap my usage at first. Feels like they wanna lock-me-in because its my first contract. I have checked my Equifax file and I have no adverse/bad record just very little on their (only showing my Bank account and Credit Card info with payments all up to date).

Will try Three tonight, Fingers crossed ;)
