Hmmm.... I thought the savings were more than that, probably not worth it then for my 2.0 doing 10k/year @ 31mpg.

How much does a decent conversion cost these days? Surely you'd need to be a pretty high mileage driver to see the benefit?

They are in the region of £1200 to £1500 depending on the system, but as the OP was considering selling her petrol car at a loss, to get a diesel I just gave an option which would work out cheaper.:D
  • I get over 40MPG out of my 1.4 Astra, and almost 500 miles out of a tank of fuel. (According to the computer - I haven't actually calculated it yet!) How come a 1.8 is so much harder on fuel?

The 1.8 petrol will have about 50% extra power (measured in bhp) over the 1.4.

The 1.8's are 140bhp and the 1.4 will be sub 100bhp.

No point at all for 10,000 miles. I moved house so do 100 a day, it will be about 25,000 miles ish for the year so for me the payback is less than 20 months. The car will still be less than 5 years old by then and about 90,000 miles. I am then hoping for a minimum of 5 years after that of running on gas. It would have been less but we use the motorhome on a weekend and the long driving holidays.

1.8 driven at the same pace as a 1.4 would use slightly less fuel.

    1.4 is more like 80bhp, 1.6 is 105/115.
