When do student loans get paid out??

Truly sorry for I am sure this must have been discussed elsewhere but just cannot find it.

My lad has started at uni and he is fretting and worrying as he has heard nothing about his loans or tuition fees.

I understand the tuition fees get paid direct to uni? He says his friend has a letter telling him how his loan has been made up and he handed it in today. We have not had this letter. He does not know if the letter went to Uni or the lad's home (hopeless - we are communicating on MSN).

Can some kind student tell me what happens. Eg. Does the loan information go to the Uni, will it be sent to his home address and how long is it likely to take??

PS he has been told that his tuition fees have to be paid by the 6th October!!!

Any advice or information will be truly welcome from this frazzled Mother.

Cheers.

    Hi

If you get in touch with your local council and ask for the student loan awards section and explain the situation and they should be able to tell you whats going on.

We hadn't heard anything so I got in touch a few of days before he went.

My son got a letter telling him how much he could borrow . The £3000 goes in 2 instalments straight to the uni and the rest is paid in 3 instalments at the beginning of each term. The first payment is a few days after they enrol.:rotfl: :rotfl:

I hope this is helpful. It is very confusing and you feel helpless when you have to leave teenagers to sort out problems but don't worry because there will be lots of help from the student services if they need it.

There's a lot of bewildered parents out here. Don't worry too much because you're not alone.:grouphug:

You should receive the letters (financial notification, payment schedhule <-- the important ones). Your son was supposed to take these to enrolment. Go to https://www.studentsupportdirect.co.uk and have your son log in with the details he should have been sent a few weeks after applying, and everything can be seen on there.
  • It depends on when he sent the application in. I sent mine in late (end aug) and have been told that it is not going to be processed for about 6 weeks.
He needs to phone student finance people to find out what is going on. Once everything has been processed he should receive a letter stating the dates on when he will be paid.
Also needs to fo speak to finance dept at uni, they are a very helpful bunch, who understand that the loans process can be a tad slow. As long as they know he has applied they should be fine. Also if he is struggling, they may be able to offer some money to tide him over, this will have to be repaid when he receives his loan though

Thank you all so much for the replies. I will tell him to go on the website suggested. We did ring the loan people a couple of times before he went but they said the computer was down but there was a delay in processing claims etc.

  • I don't know what the new system is, but it used to be that all the forms got sent to the student at home, and the student told the university what the situation was, and then the student proves it with the forms that they have to take into the university.

However, it might be worth giving the student loans people and/or your local education authority a call, just to clear it up.

The university will generally be understanding about the tuition fees and in my case anyway, let me hold off paying them for nearly 2 months till I got the loans people to talk to them! As long as he goes and chats to them now, they should be able to help :)

Hope that helps even just a little bit!

Edit: Oops, that'll teach me for taking so long to reply - it's already been answered! :)
  • Re tuition fees, my son's payment schedule says that Student Finance will pay the fees to the Uni in two instalments (both during 2007) so I wouldn't be too concerned about payment of tuition fees.

My daughter went through clearing so all her applications have been late. The first person i spoke to at the LEA said it might take ten weeks, the second 3 weeks.

She has been assessed on the non means tested thing and they have sent her a notification letter which she had to sign and send off. We also had to complete forms wiith our income and they have also been sent off.

Next she should get a letter with the actual dates when her maintance loan goes into her account but this could be another 2 weeks. The tuition fees are paid directly to the uni

In the meantime she is living on her Natwest overdraft. She has applied for part time jobs but without much seriousness.

Talk to student welfare about your concerns, Their number might be on your uni website. My daughters student uni finance dep were very off with her but welfare were much better, made sure she had enough to eat etc

PS At least you are communicating with your offspring. Dad rang ours last night and got a swear word and we have not heard form her today!
