More A&L/Santander crap

Tried to open an Esaver account on line today - as an existing customer with A&L
Previously with A&L opening new accounts was easy.......not anymore.
Now I'm asked...
My employment status.....(of what relevance this is I dont know)
My income plus other income and how often this is paid (invented some numbers)
The next page wanted to know how much was I going to initally invest and then finally invest and where it was coming from (well even I don't know the answers to those questions!).
Finally as a coupe de grace they wanted to know my debit card password. Unfortuntely for A&L/Santander I don't have one of their debit cards, much less a password for one and I certainly don't want one.
Ah well - another customer gone elsewhere.
I and begining to wonder whether a letter to the Bank of England asking whether Santander is a fit and proper organisation to do financial business in the UK might be worthwhile - if only to see what answer they come up with...... Particularly as the UK CEO of Santander is on the Court of the Bank of England.

Worth a go. I for one would be very interested but you probably wouldnt get a reply. Santander dont do "replies" to customers!!!!!!!0

Pardon my ignorance, but what is the purpose of a debit card password? I have an A&L debit card but have never had (or needed) a password... (unless you mean "Verified by Visa")0

You may find that several of those questions are for anti money laundering purposes.. (except the one about your passwords??) I'm afraid you will be asked these questions again when you take your business elsewhere.0 -

That's when you become a "valued" customer.

Most of the things you have been asked are KYC questions required by law0

you may also wish to ask the bank of england is RBS, HBOS and Lloyds TSB have any right to do business in the UK since they borrowed billions of taxpayer pounds when Santander did not and also rescued 2 institutions - B&B and A&L - seriously - why have such strong gripes over such simple questions??0

That would be Know Your Customer data required by the FSA - Financial Markets Act - think it was 20020

So many of the complaints I have heard about A&L are(like this one) without foundation."Some folks are wise and some are otherwise." - Tobias Smollett0

Oh dear, it might not have been a good idea to give that bogus income information, because doesn't that sort of behaviour tend to get you blacklisted by CIFAS or HUNTER or something?ChiefGrasscutter wrote: »Now I'm asked...
