WRONG.................. you are not tipping on the meal , you are tipping on the serivice that you get during the meal

In some restaurants tips get shared with the kitchen staff. Which seems fair enough to me.
  • Heres a tip.......

    Dont expect one!
  • In a Deli once in NY where we had some Eats and drinks , bill was about $50 for the two of us , gave the waiter/server $5 tip !
He held it up in the air and said to all and sundry in the Deli , " The English gent just gave me $5 ! Not much eh ? "
Ah! I said , Sorry about that , gimme it back! he did and i put it in my pocket !
hey he said , thats mine !
No said I , its mine , I work like most people and if someone tips me i do not try and make the person look a cheapskate !
Customers in the Deli applauded !
So tip what you feel comfortable with and dont let it bother you !
FWIW : if the employers paid a decent minimum rate the staff would not be depending on tips !
    A Bast**d I May Be ! I Was Born One !
    Whats Your Excuse ?
  • Tipping is OTT in the US IMO but it is part of the culture if you go there so factor it in!

thats such a wrong statement i feel inclined to give you grief..

Most places where you should tip make their staff work for tips and have such a minimal hourly wage that they have to make it work for them..

You sound like a tight ignorant !!!! who would equally whinge about what they were not getting i f in the same position.

And if tips were not part of the equation, the servers would have no real incentive to do more than to do a passable job...as most of their income comes from tips, they have a lot of incentive to do an awesome job. Without tips and instead having a higher hourly wage, most of the really great servers would go do something else (many work these sorts of jobs BECAUSE of the potential income from tips) and we'd be left with what's left.

There's a reason that service is much better in the US. :)
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

Indeed - and it's also the reason why, if you go into any bar or restaurant in the US, there are so many more staff. Go into a busy pub in the UK and there's often only one or two people behind the bar, no table service and nobody clearing tables. In the US there are always lots of staff as it is so cheap for the owner to employ them. Everyone's a winner - more jobs, better service and higher incomes. Eating out in the US is usually cheaper than in the UK so even if you include the tip you are still getting a good deal.

Many US States have a lower minimum wage for tipped staff: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._minimum_wages - often little over $2/hr. A decent bartender or waiter/ess will easily make 10 times that. It is considered a good job rather than a "McJob" here.

Thanks for your opinion, I'll file it suitably.

I never suggested not tipping if you reread the post before ranting like a lunatic. As you know nothing about me feel free to retract your ramblings in your final paragraph

Oh yes and welcome to the forum - the rules are at the top in the big banner in case you need assistance on that

Edit:- Just seen your multiple posts since last night, I take it back, you clearly know the rules as a multiple identity poster...

Point sort of taken , but I would class " a good meal" as being one where the service was top notch along with the overall experience

I do appreciate you could not like your meal but have great service however. not sure that makes me "WRONG" though ;)
  • My way of thinking about this is that im never going to see this person again.

If i think the service was good, i usually round the bill up a little so $41 would become $50, $48 would become $60 etc.

The last place i ate out, our meals were ordered, my son (aged 2) wanted chicken nuggets & chips, something simple. The food arrived and his dish never, about 15 mins it turned up when we had nearly finished.

That restraunt received no tip that day. The waitress should of ensured the food order was complete (she took it), the chef should of made sure it was all complete before sending it out.

Though, on a funny side. We were away with work in hooters, and there was about 45-50 of us drinking and eating. The staff started to complain that these 45-50 blokes were not tipping enough. What then ensured was that 45 blokes moved onto the next bar down the road, they were happy for us to drink the bar dry.

Were british, i think they expect it.
