6mth old cat diarrhoea problem

my cat has had diarrhoea for the past 7 days. tried starving him for 24hrs then have fed boiled rice and chicken since. seemed to be improving so mixed a little of his dried food in with the rice/chicken last night but seems to have worsened again :(

he went to the vets 10 days ago when he was stuggling to keep any of his usual dried food down and was sick quite a bit in a 24hr period.

since then runny poos. is it time for the vets again now? i am sceptical about another trip to the vets. i only know he has diarrhoea as his litter tray is inside. if he was doing everything outside i would be none the wiser.

  • I think with kittens it's important to get them checked out as they can get dehydrated quite quickly because of how small they are.
  • Sometimes cats do go through periods where they might be sick a few times in one or two days however they really shouldnt have runs for that long and you seem to have done everything right so far.

If you are worried enough to post on here after doing all you have done then I think perhaps a trip to the vet would be in order.

I agree that you need to get back to the vets tomorrow.
I can't be of any help but hope he gets better soon.
  • I had a kitten, same problem... within 2 days he was suffering dehydration...

I has to water down his food... and give him special food for poorly tummies from the vet!

I know is costs a fortune going to the vets, but don't let the poor thing suffer x

  • Hi when we got out cats they were quite sickly and often had diarrhoea. The vet just advised us to keep an eye on them as they seemed otherwise healthy and active. At one point we thought it might be flies and other nasties getting into the food so we started religiously binning every bit of food not eaten and thoroughly washing out food and water bowls twice daily. We also cleaned the litter trays completely every other day. They settled down within a couple of weeks and have generally been fine since. Good luck x
  • That reminds me... my kitten was 'homesick' for his mum... I borrowed a Female kitten from a friend and instantly he started getting better within 2 weeks he was fine after a month of problems... he was put under anistetic twice!!

So we had to keep the Female Kitten!!

Unfortunately the first one went missing before he turned three, and even microchipped he was never found, it's been 10 months!

We then had to get the Female cat a companion because she has severe depression and stopped eating!

    Cats!!!!

Agree with Wannabee, you're looking at dehydration problems. May need drip. Go to vet, then worry about any other problems later. Have you vaccinated for enteritis?
  • I agree that a vet visit my be in order...ask for a stool sample to be taken.
Other than that I would try Pro Kolin paste which can help settle the guts, oh and I would cut out the dry food and instead feed a grain free wet food. Cats really do not digest grain well and kittens are especially sensitive.
  • just back from the vets. been given a cpl of days worth of pro kolin and stomorgyl. got a stool sample ready to take back in if the medicine does not improve things over the next few days. boiled rice n chicken it is for the next few days. luckily he hadn't lost too much weight and was not dehydrated at all

thanks all for your help. will post again soon.

    :)
