A friend had lost all the files on a probably dodgy sd card. I managed to recover them to my portable hard disk: they were viewable. I transferred them to a DVD-R, finalized it, checked it, sent it to the friend.

It would not play on her Mac.

I deleted the files on the portable drive, but now wanting probably to use those again, have attempted their recovery a second time.

However, I can't open them with my PhotoPlus X3,
nor view them in the Windows viewer.

What could be the cause and what might be ways to surmount the disaster?

What could have stopped the pics being viewed on the Mac?

Thanks in anticipation.:)

Edit

I am using Win7 64bit Home Premium.

I suppose the first step is to get the DVD back and see if the pics are visible on your own computer. They definitely are jpg format? Then can look at why not transferable to a Mac.

Just ask for the DVD back (as your PC could read the disc), then email or FTP the images to the Mac user.

Get the DVD back and get the pics onto another medium that WILL transfer to the Mac.....

There are about 250:D. I doubt either email clients would accept, but how feasible would FTP be for the task?
  • how about tranferring over MSN or other chat based program. No need for email limits then.

FTP is only viable for this if you already have access to an ftp site.

irfanview will sometimes open files when windows viewer will not.
You can then save them again using irfanview and they should open okay.
It might just be that the mac has trouble with that particular disc or that the disc did not write properly .
If you have saved them as ordinary jpegs and finalised the disc, they should show up on the mac okay and be viewable in 'preview' which is like 'windows viewer'.

Not necessarily - I use FTP to share a folder on my PC, so I am the FTP site! It's quicker than me uploading them to a third-party site, then downloading from there, and there's no file size or speed limitations.

The person with files to share installs an FTP server (such as FileZilla Server), and the person downloading installs an FTP client (such as FileZilla Client). You'll probably want to set up "passive" FTP (as opposed to "active"), as this means that the client won't need to open or forward any ports (if I remember rightly). There's a really helpful explanation of how active and passive FTP work here, which supplements the FileZilla help files quite well.

Obviously, online file sharing sites are much easier to use, but if you need to share files regularly FTP is so easy once it's set up.

P.S. I just noticed that the Giveaway of the Day website is giving away free copies of wGXe Photo Recovery for the next 8 hours, which might be able to recover the lost files...?

Get your friend to copy the disc and send it by the old fashioned RM?

Thanks all. Your contributions are at least educating me, even though my name's not Rita.:D

I have still to get in contact to find what happened out of contact with local friends.

On a random forum there was a suggestion to use Irfanview for graphic files that would not open. I tried it with the items I had downloaded from the dodgy SD card the lady gave me and deleted (and recovered).

No luck with actually opening them, but from Irfanview I did get two errors. Hopefully someone can suggest my next actions. Do I amend the extensions; what are the required letters?

Once amended can the files be re saved successfully as jpgs?]err1160910png.png
