Internet for laptop - Advice please

Hi,

I want to buy a laptop for my teenage daughter for christmas - but I don't have a clue about how or what I need so that she can use it for internet access. :o

Currently we have a virgin media package including broadband - which is connected to my pc. Do I need another broadband line just so she can access the internet on the laptop from her bedroom in the next room? Or is there something I can buy -so that both my pc and the laptop can receive broadband in the house from the same line?

Any help appreciated. I have tried to research online and I am totally confused now. A Wireless router looks like it could be what I want, but I could be totally wrong :o If it is - Could both the pc and laptop receive internet at the same time through the same connection. And would it affect performance/speed.

many thanks .:)

How do you connect your PC to the internet now and are you on virgin cable or ADSL (Phone line)?

You are correct, you will need a wireless router but it needs to be the correct type for your connection either cable or ADSL. You will be able to connect both PC and laptop to the internet at the same time and it will not have any affect on your speed or performance.
  • Thank you so much for your help.

I have a virgin phone line with broadband, so Virgin cable I guess? (I didn't know what ADSL was so looked it up and it said you needed a BT phone line - Which I don't have)

Any advice I what I need to buy would be much appreciated.

    Thank you.

I would go for this (unless, of course, you can blag a free wireless router from Virgin):

If you are getting your TV service through VM then you are on VM cable. The Virgin ADSL service is called Virgin National.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
