  • Honestly, I have the Delia 'rules' and because I don't want to stand watching over it

No standing over it with Delia :D Put lid on, set timer and forget about it :D

To be honest, pretty much all of the suggestions here are broadly similar ...

  • I just use a mocrowave dish. For two people: 1 cup of rice, 2 cups of boiling water, bit of butter, and salt. Put in microwave for 12 minutes. Works every time!

  • The most important thing is to wash all the starch off the rice first. Give it several washes by filling the pan with water, and slooshing it around with your hand, then pour off the murky starch water. Do this about three times, put in fresh water to twice as high as the rice, bring to the boil, stir well once, put the lid on tight and turn down the heat to really low. go and watch Corrie, then come back after 15 mins and fork it up. Perfecto!

I used to live in Hong Kong and everyone used rice cookers there in the 80's.

I still eat loads of rice and my rice cooker ensures it's perfect every time. You can even steam fish and veggies in the basket over the top of the cooking rice.

I used to be he same with rice ,until last week ,I finally learned how to make the most perfect rice!!
Far better than boil in the bag !
I rinse three times then put in the pan with twice as most cold water ( 1 cup rice - 2 cups cold water) Bring to the boil ,stir once ,then turn heat down ,put a lid on and leave it alone for 10 mins!! do not sir it or take lid off ,then after ten mins ,turn heat off ,lift lid and with a fork ,lightly 'fluff' the rice ,put the lid back on and leave for another couple of mins ,with no heat.
Honeslty ,if I can do it ,anyone can!!:j

I don't get why people have so much trouble with rice. The only thing I can think of, it's not your cooking, it's just not very good rice. I put plenty of water in a pan, toss in as much basmati as I want, bring it to the boil, turn it down, and then cook until it's cooked. It takes 10-12 minutes, and depending on how much water you have in there, you can often tell because the top of the liquid starts to make funny little bubbles. Now and again I overcook rice I was planning for a stir-fried rice, but it's very very rare.

This one works for me ...

    BOILED RICE

    Per Person

    INGREDIENTS

    250ml of water
¼ of a teaspoon of salt
100g (125ml by volume) of rice*

    METHOD

Check the cooking time on the packet.

Put the water, salt and rice into a saucepan on a medium heat. Bring to the boil. Stir once to stop it sticking to the bottom. Turn down the heat until it is just boiling (simmering). Put the lid on the pan. Cook until the water is absorbed.

    DO NOT STIR!

Take the pan off the heat and let it stand for a couple of minutes. Fluff it up with a fork to separate the grains and serve.

    TIPS

The most important thing about cooking boiled rice is to use twice as much water (by volume) as rice.

    * Basmati is the best all purpose rice. It cooks quickly, it is more fragrant (its name is Hindi for "fragrant") than long grain and it also holds together during cooking.

I use Jamie Olivers way, just boil for ten minutes rinse well then put in a colander over a pan filled with a little boiling water cover with foil and leave on a low simmer for 5 minutes turn off heat fork through, leave another 5 minutes and you have perfect fluffy rice every time
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light
