The easiest way to cook rice is to use a rice cooker. You can get these from major chinese supermarkets/stores and cost around £40 although there are fanciers one as with all electrical appliances.

We usually buy a 25kg bag of Thai fragrant rice for about £20 and this lasts us (2 adults) for about three to four months eating it nearly every day.

We eat rice with at least one veg and one meat dish. Any leftovers are eaten the following day with newly prepared dishes.

We usually cook enough rice to last two or three meals - it is normally left in the rice cooker overnight and re-heated in the microwave. If the weather is hot then the rice is stored in the fridge. Rice can be left in the fridge two to three days.

We wash the rice thoroughly to remove the starch and then cover it with enough water so that if you put you palm on top of the rice the water just covers your hand. After a while you can judge the right amount of water without measuring it.

Switch the rice cooker on and leave it. It automatically switches off when it is done so you do not need to keep an eye on it.

As we both work, we don't spend long cooking during the week and it typically takes 15 - 20 minutes to cook from scratch with the rice taking the longest.

Based on two people eating rice for 90 days, it cost about 20p per meal with very minimal wastage.

Strange as it may sound we do not get sick of eating rice everyday.
