Just bought son a Nokia 1100 to take to India as he will be away for a few months, and I do not want him to take his current Nokia which was very expensive in case he lost it.

Never use a mob abroad, will be pleased for the following infor, the network is virgin, since it is basic, will he able to text or phone and how much does it cost? I bought Virgin as I got it cheap and there is a £25 airtime in it. Does he need to do anything to the phone before taking it abroad.
Thanks

he is better off paying for a sim card when he gets there, a sim over there is about 5£ and he'll need to top it up with about 10£ ,.

also they do some thing too the back of the phone where the sims gose into, so there sims over there can fit into them,.. (something like that) so i would advise giving him a 3310 or 8310 (dct3 phone) older model phone as they might not be able too do the tech mod stuff to the 1100 to make there sim fit in there

if he uses the virgin sim there he'll run out of money quick,

I thought, he could just use it to text. According to the virgin website sending text cost 35p. What do you think, thanks for your help.
  • As long as he only uses it for texts then he should be ok, its just when he starts making calls his credit will disappear fast.

Also remember that he will be charged international rates for receiving calls, not just outgoing calls.
Treat everyday as your last one on earth! and one day you will be right.

marylee, too be on the safe side send him with a 3310 and a virgin sim card,.

when hes there he could look at the option of buying a indian network provider sim card,.

and it would'nt be a bad idea too send him with the 1100 to sell over there when he gets too a phone shop and it will pick up a bit of cash even over there,. ;)

You know, these youngsters of today, I do not think it will agree to take a 3310. Now, he is telling me, he does not want to take the 1100 because he has to carry a charger, he is backpacking over there. It's his second time in India, I thought a cheap nokia for keep in touch by text rather than waiting to find a cyber cafe for e-mail. Anyway, thanks for the advice.

Do you have a mobile yourself (on a contract)? Not 3 though

Take a look at the International Calls From Your Mobile thread http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=23731

This means you will be able to call an India Mobile from your inclusive minutes via the Simply-fone call-through number. This works from Orange, O2, T-mob at the moment. Voda customers have been charged then refunded.

Also, for the India phone think of a callback service, maybe Easy-dial or Buytel, which will do India mobile to UK calls for 14-15p
