Problem using card reader with Co-operative Bank

I've been using the card readers for doing various transactions for quite some time without any problems. However, when I had to use one for the first time for my Co-op current a/c (not one I use much) in order to set up a new transfer it kept failing, saying I must have entered the code into the reader incorrectly, or the code it generates into the box on the page incorrectly. After the first failed attempt I was very careful about typing in correctly, yet I have now been locked out for the second time. Never had a problem like this with my other accounts, so wondered if anyone else had similar?

I had a problem once at the counter of a branch of Barclays. The reader confirmed my pin was correct, but the cashier's terminal was refusing the code she entered. It worked after a couple of goes and I assumed she was making a keying entry.

When I called the Co-op they couldn't offer an explanation (other than I'd made a mistake - unlikely, as I by then made 2 x 3 attempts, so was being extra careful by then!). Thought perhaps the amount (£9500) may be a factor, so suggested I try a few pounds instead. I have to go to an ATM to unlock this time, so will try that next time.
  • When you move to the 2nd box do you use the tab key by any chance? I always had problems until I stopped doing so.

That's my normal procedure, yes. I may have tried it with the cursor, but it's something worth trying. Nationwide use a single box, so situation never arsose before. Thanks for the suggestion!
  • Well I unlocked my account at the ATM and have just tried sending £5 to myself and used my cursor to move between the boxes entering the code and i still get the message that I've entered the code incorrectly or the wrong amount or using the wrong card! I'm now at a loss as to what to do (though they moved the main sum over the phone, so less important now).
  • Sorry to hear that, I've no idea what the problem could be then.

One very long shot - have you tried another of your card readers with the Co-op card to see if that makes any difference? As I understand it, all the banks card readers work in exactly the same way.

All the banks' card readers are interchangeable.

Probably a silly question, but I'll throw my hat into the ring.

Do you only have one chip card with the Co-op? If you have two, it may be that you're not selecting/using the right card.

  • OK, finally had a success moving £5 though still not 100% sure which change made the difference. Tried Firefox (tried Opera and Konqueror before) but suspect the crucial difference was in reading the instructions! lol All other times with Nationwide I had pressed the key with the tick symbol after inserting the card. Looking at the notes alongside the Co-op's payment details it says press the key with the two arrows. I also noticed that with this route it didn't ask me to enter the amount on the card reader. Looking at the NW's card instructions it says the arrows key is used for setting up a single arrangement, and the tick key is for setting up regular payments or making payments. Looking at the Co-op's instructions in only shows the arrows key being used.

Apologies if everyone else already knows this, but thought it worth sharing.
  • The mystery is solved - excellent!
