Problems with Letting agent regarding bills?

I'm after some advice...
We moved out of a rented flat on the 30th June this year, on the day we left we were given our meter readings by the caretaker of the block which I wrote down.
The meters were in a locked cupboard which we had no access to.
We duly gave the readings we were givento Elec/Water co's and paid the final bills off.
Having gone to the agents to sort out deposit returning today I was told that our meter readings didn't match the ones on their list.
It seems as though we've been given half the readings for our flat and half for next door.
The agents wanted us to go sort it out with the caretaker, god knows what they expected us to do? So I told them it was their problem and that they should be sorting it out, it's what they're paid for!
I was just wondering whether anyone had any advice on where we stand. We've done everything in good faith and I'm not very happy to be told we haven't paid enough for our bill.
