Smoking multistove-please help

Hi, lit our multistove last night but it filled with smoke and even spilled out of the top vent! Had scrunched up paper and kindling inside as we normally do to start it. Any advice as to why this has happened would be appreciated.

Maybe it was way too warm outside to get a decent draw from the chimney. Combined with that, the wind could have been in the wrong direction causing down drafts or you have a bird's nest or blockage in your chimney. When was it last swept?

    Have you had it swept?

Please don't use it again until it has been looked at - blocked chimneys can be lethal.
  • Had it swept March time and not used it much but will call in the chimney sweep again. Thanks for the advice.

I'm glad to hear that. It could be a birds nest or a partial chimney or liner collapse that's causing it. Good luck!
  • Did it start to draw once you managed to get some heat up the flue? If not it may be blocked with a birds nest. Between March and now they would have easily had time to build a nest.

If the smoke was coming out in puffs related to outside wind conditions it could be down draught which can be solved with a cowl.

Get a sweep out to check the flue isn't blocked......if it is, have the nest removed and get the to fit a cowl to stop this happening again.

Before I got my bird guard I always got my chimney swept around July time after most of the chimney nesting birds had finished nesting.

Ours does this when the chimney is cold and the wind is in the wrong direction! - its awful but when the chimney heats up it goes fine! This usually happens when we have not had the fire on for a long time
Saving in my terramundi pot £2, £1 and 50p just for me! :j

I was just about to mention cold chimneys, I quite often get calls to sweep when in fact all it is, is a cold chimney.

My customers look at me gone out when I say its not drawing because your chimney is cold !
You may click thanks if you found my advice useful

Smoking into the room normally caused by blockages if the stove has been working fine til now - restricted flueway - tarred up flue liner, nests, old liner broken away at top...........
  • It will take 5 mins for a decent sweep to diagnose the problem.....worth £35 in my eyes.
