Support at university. Court not CSA.

My son is now 21 and has just finished his second year at university. I'm told he intends to do another three years after this. The original arrangement was made by a court not the CSA. His mother has asked for continuing payment until he finishes. Is it normal to be expected to pay during an advanced degree? I have no income but some savings.

See what the court order says, as you maybe in contempt of court, where is the line drawn? check there is also not a cause to pay for any future wedding etc etc

Order is just to continue payment, I don't understand your point about contempt as I have always paid. Are you serious about weddings??0 -

I would say you pay until higher education, however as you have a court order, it depends on what that suggested, so you can't just stop paying as you may be violating the court order, as for the wedding, the way things look, it seems that the other party wants you to keep contributing until you die or even beyond then

It does not mean they will be successful, at the age of your 'child' I was already well into a mortgage.
Are you expected to pay all the uni fees or just contribute towards them? I would seek professional direction with regards the situation.
Just a weekly support payment. As I wrote earlier I have no income, so that would make it less likely that the court would continue it, however I have some savings so I'm concerned they will continue it. Since I'm nearly sixty and may never get another job, I don't really want to lose my savings.
As you say, it may be best to get legal advice.0 -
My court order states ex should pay until the end of the first degree although he stopped paying anything 4 months ago so trying to enforce the order through REMO as he now lives in America.
Son is about to start law degree so I'd expected payments to continue until then and planned to use them to pay for his accommodation. I accepted they would end when he graduates and he'd not receive any further support from his father during his additional training to become a barrister0 -

I suppose it also depends on the level of savings, a few grand is different from a few million
Good luck though :beer:0 -
Just remember the cut off time is age 19, after that then it would be up to the parent, but the QC is then an adult in the eyes of the Law and eveyone else. What one parent wants is not the question. If you were a family unit then it is a different question, but that is, as they say history!0

It would be a kindness to support your son through his education, as I am sure his mother will. Presumably you can pay the money direct to him? Please do not confuse me with other gratefulsforhelp. x0
