Can i do this?

I bought a TV at christmas from tesco. The sound was working for literally 2 weeks then hastn worked since. They cant exchange etc because I dont have a receipt so i just left it. Could I not just buy the same tele, switch them over and take it back with the receipt and say i dont want it, the sound has broke and i want my money back?

  • It would be fraud, but your might get away with it. You may get offered a replacement or only a repair instead of money back.

So correct me if I'm wrong here but you've had a telly without sound sitting in your house throughout the whole of this year and you didn't take it back to the shop?

    Really!?

No i took it back to tesco, but as i had no receipt because i lose these things as i am a bloke they wouldnt let me exchange it. SO this is the only way around it that i can see

Take the TV back to Tesco and get it repaired, refunded or replaced?

to commit criminal fraud. (the serial number of the new set would be different).

But I do think Tesco have ways of checking if you did buy a set on a given day. It is maybe too late now. But I would have thought that a replacement/repair without a receipt might be possible, if approached properly.

Alternatively, a repair to the set might be possible at reasonable cost.

I know of a couple of people who have done this (not just in Tesco) and have got away with it.

I think you COULD do what you have suggested - and the chances are excellent that you would get it refunded if you took it back within a couple of days, said it didn't work and you wanted your money back. I doubt they would faff around arguing about it.

What it comes down to is whether you feel that you are morally right to try this - it really is a bit of a minefield ! If you feel OK about working what is essentially a 'fiddle', then go ahead. You could argue that Tesco sold you a duff TV and, for various reasons of policy, they won't sort it out for you - so you have to work round the system! Personally, I certainly wouldn't condemn or judge you if you choose to do that - I doubt if many of us are absolutely snow white when it comes to manipulating things !

I think that, if I was in your shoes, I would PROBABLY try the same flanker. Part of my justification to myself would be that Tesco CS staff should have helped you out by telling you that they could (with a bit of an effort) locate your original purchase of their computer system and that would have done as a Proof of Purchase. They didn't bother doing that so I might feel they weren't very helpful ! My DH would tell me I was a devious moo - but I can live with that! Its your moral decision - best of luck!

What on Earth does being 'a bloke' have to do with not taking care of the receipt for expensive purchases like a television?

I can't believe you're getting into this almost a year after the sound stopped working.

I've got real trouble believing you're on the level here, and if you are then goodness knows why you didn't make more of a fuss to Tesco at the time, take proof of purchase like a bank statement, ask them to look up the transaction on their computers, or failing that get in touch with Tesco Customer Services.

Thanks for your help mate, very helpful ;)

You could do this but it is highly likely they would only offer a reapir/ replacement which is their legal right.

You may then end up with 2 Tvs

What made you wait 9 months to think of this hair brained idea

Morally you should not be even contemplating this
