Taking soap powder on holiday!

Bit of an odd thread title I know :rotfl:

Off to Florida in a couple of weeks :T

I usually end up doing a bit of clothes washing while over there, in the early days I used to get one of those small tubes of travel wash and do handwashing in the hotel sink.

The last few years I have bought soap powder over there to use in the hotel's laundrette facility, but of course end up leaving it over there as its too heavy/messy to bring back.

Anybody take there own powder or the little pouches with them....just have visions of the little blue (or whatever colour) pouches opening and ending up with blue clothes:o

I was looking at them in the local supermarket this morning and they are a heck of a lot cheaper than buying powder over there.

Any ideas:D

  • I have travelled to Florida on numerous occassions and realy dislike their soap powder so I have for the last few visits taken ariel tablets in my luggage, I also prefer to stick to a brand that I know well, I put them, a few packs together in a small ziplock bag and pack in the suitcase. On most occassion they arrive fine but a couple of times they have been a little smashed but obviously still usable. and they also make you suitcase smell nice, I don't know that I would take powder though, someone might think that it is something else!

Just buy it there, risking damaging clothes is false economy.

I usually take the washing tablets as they come packaged in twos, and are nicely sealed up and clearly labelled (taking an anonymous plastic bag of white powder doesn't feel like a good idea :D)
I also take them in the little net bag and I take the fabric conditioner 'pearls', which I put in a plastic bag tied with a knot.
Never had a problem with them splitting open.

Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the end

  • Sorry should have made myself a bit clearer.

I wasn't actually thinking of taking the powder....yes it would look a bit suspicious:eek:

I use liquid at home so don't know what the tablets or pouches are like as I've never used them......thats why I was after others advice....there must be other ladies out on here who have to do the washing while on holiday....I know the laundrettes I use are always being used by other holidaymakers.

I have a small plastic bottle which I fill from my large bottle of washing liquid at home. I just re-use and refill it whenever I go away. It gets packed in with all my toiletries, within a separate plastic bag, and has never leaked.

I use the tablets and prefer them to liquid and powder. I get the cheapies from Tesco and they do as good a job as more expensive brands. They come wrapped in transparent packs of two with labelling on and they don't crumble easily so they'd probably be your best bet.

When i went travelling i considered taking some powder with me but thought against it because it could look suspicious. I ended up with a tube of travel wash which i wasn't convinced did as good a job. I would suggest taking the tablets which come in packs of two wrapped in plastic as someone else has suggested, i think Persil do them like this but i'm sure other brands will too. I use fairy powder and always have done so i'm not too sure about other products on the shelf. The Persil wrapper is branded so it's obvious what it is and if they do crumble up on the way they will still be usable.
  • Thanks for the help so far.

Looks like tablets it is then:T

.........unless anyone comes up with a better idea;)

Better idea is to buy it over there for a couple of dollars and leave what you dont use for the maid or other holiday makers. As you have done in the past.
  • photome........that is what I've normally done....but it isn't cheap over there, seems to be one of the things that costs more in the US than the UK.
