Insurance for new car

Hello.

My dad is getting a new car delivered next week.
He has to get the car insured before he can collect it.
At the moment his current policy runs out near the end of October.
Should he ring up his insurer and change the new car for the old one and pay the difference unyill the policy ends in October or get a new policy for his new car and the cancel the old one?.
Also when he took out his current policy he had to declare that he damaged the car when he hit a bollard and claimed on the insurance but kept his no claims as it was protected.I think when he got a quote he declared that crash as it was within the 3 years they asked. It is now 3 1/5 so will he still have to tell them when he gets a new quote?.

    Hi boohoo.

I'd advise your Dad to call his current co and see how much it will be to change cars, once he has this info use the comaprison sites.
Weigh up the 2 figures and see what's best for him.

We have recently had to do the same. Our policy runs out Nov and to take the traded in car off the policy and add the new one was under £20 for us but a whole new policy for the new car was just over £400 so for us it was a no brainer :D

As for still declaring the claim it depends on how a particular company/comparison site word the question. Some ask for accidents, claims and losses in the last 3 years, some ask for any in the last 5 years.

    Hope that helps.

He should be able to call his current insurer and change the car details for an admin fee plus any difference in the premium until the end of the policy. However the old car will no longer be insured at that point.

He has to get the car insured before he can collect it.

What's happening to the old car?
I will assume he only needs one insured at any one time.

His options are to ask his insurer to switch the policy to the new car.
If he's trading it in and diving to the showroom he will need to get the time right and pay attention to that.
There is normally a change in premium plus an admin fee.

Alternative is to cancel and get a new policy, but this may not be cheapest because you lose a part years NCD (only get this for full years) and have to pay short term rates and pay a cancellation fee. The only way to find out is to check the figures but probably amending the existing policy is the way to go.
It is now 3 1/5 so will he still have to tell them when he gets a new quote?.
If any new insurer asks for claims within 3 years then no, but beware some ask for longer time periods so the questions need to be read carefully (getting it wrong even innocently can have bad consequences).
If he amends his existing quote then they have all his info already.

The important question is does he need only one policy i.e. trading in adn only owning one car at once, or does he need two polcies for a period e.g. selling old car privately.

He is using the car in part exchange and will have to take the car to the dealer when he picks up the new car.
When he picks it up he will have 4 weeks left on the current insurance before renewal date.

The options are to amend the policy or cancel and get a new one elswhere.

    Downside to amending are :
    1) He will have to be careful about the timing i.e. if he states that the amendment happens at 10a.m. then he needs to make sure he doesn't drive the old car after 10a.m. and doesn't start driving the new one afterwards. Unless of course the insurer is prepared to give some overlap on it.

Downsides to cancelling and getting a new policy are :
    1) It may be more expensive to cancel as 11 months cover will be a bit more expnesive than 11/12ths of the annual policy.
    2) He will loose 11 months NCD.

Amending ought to be best, but there is no way to tell, because he might find his existing insurer is not competitive on the new car or if it's anything that's not run of the mill there is a possibility they might not even insure the new model.
He can only tell by getting the figures for both cases, but amending the policy is the obvious way to go as he will get an extra years NCD in 4 weeks.
  • I did this recently with Norwich Union. They gave me a one day overlap where both cars were insured so I could drive both (although clearly not simultaneously, that would be mad) and I paid the difference in premium to the end of the policy.

Phone the insurerer - I'm sure they can explain you and sort it out.

Whenever I have changed cars I have always amended the policy and the insurer has always given me an overlap.

'same here re the overlap, and i have never had to pay an admin fee for the amendment.

Ring the ins. company, they will advise you. Then you have it from the horses mouth.

Shop around for quotes when the policy is about to expire.

It really is as simple as that.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Their advertising campaign was obviously money well spent.
