But you are still saving on your own childcare.

    Swings and roundabouts.

I'm not saying anything bad about childminders, everyone moans about their job but at the end of the day if it was that bad you wouldn't be doing it.

it can be a very enjoyable worthwhile job, i absolutley loved it for the majority of the 10 years that i did it

its just not as easy as some people (not you) perceive it to be

when i started to feel i wasn't enjoying it as much thats when i stopped doing it, i didn't feel it was fair on the children if my heart wasn't 100% in it

i am still friends with a lot of my old mums, and the children for that matter, some of them are quite grown up now

what did get me down was the attitude of some of the mums i dealt with.. i didn't feel treated properly :(

the comment about my car really upset me!

We pay our childminder half pay when we are on holiday, and had to insist on paying her half when she is off on holiday too...

she's a wee gem though, couldn't wish for a nicer childminder... so we treat her fairly, and she appreciates it and continues to do a grand job.:D

Well not really because my mum used to have my son for free ;)

But I am not complaining about the job - I am complaining about people making accusations of CM's being greedy and just trying to highlight that it's not a sit round eating cream cakes all day job, certainly not with the under 5's at any rate.

You are a customer, not an employer. If Joe the shopkeeper up the road from me wanted time off he wouldn't bill us for goods we hadn't bought to get it.

    what a ridiculous analogy :rotfl:

Nearly as ridiculous as charging a customer for work you're not doing. Don't cowboy builders pull that one too?

do you think a CM should charge if its the parents choice to go on holiday?

you could say the same about any employee being paid holiday by their company, how ridiculous!

You contract services from a childminder, they set their conditions of service you both sign an agreement, so you either agree or you don't! OP was just inquiring if its normal practice not stating that she was not going to use them if it was.

I'm just shocked at some of the derogatory comments on here, thought this was a friendly forum.

Yes, the parents have contracted out a service then opted not to use it for that period of time. If I don't use my phone for a month I would still expect to pay my bill.

But that's exactly it, they're not employees!

Some posters on here are so happy with their service their willing to pay holidays, and in a free market that's perfectly fine, but if it's not explicitly contractually agreed, then they have no right to expect it. There are advantages to being self employed, but you can't have it both ways.

Suited you are right, the OP has not made it clear whether this agreement was within the contract or discussed at the initial meeting or in the service statement, if OP signed the contract stating this then she has to abide by it, however if it is not in the contract or service statement discussed on initial visit then she can take issue with that!

I was just annoyed at the derogatory sweeping statements being made towards Childminders as a whole. There's good and bad in all service industries out there! I know where I am at least 65% of the childminders are on the quality network which means for them inspections from the Network team every 3 months with one of those visits unannounced. Over 90% have a level 3 qualification childcare qualification at least and we are recognised nationally for the percentage of childminders achieving good or outstanding on their initial inspection due to the process we take people through before we allow them to become childminders in our authority.
