I realise this thread's gone off the boil a bit now, but the problem of affordable solo travel remains...
I scour the net for deals on flights, hotels and car hire and build my own package - sometimes you cant avoid a room supplement but you can avoid it with some sites or even sometimes the hotel direct will give you a deal. Check hotels on Trip Advisor but ALWAYS read all the reviews because people complain about nonsense things and whatever they didn't like might not bother you.

Actually, I don't think I have ever paid for a single supplement. Many hotels don't have single rooms (becuase most single people prefer a double) - or if they do the single rooms are always in the worst part of the hotel. They just charge by the room regardless of how many people are in there. I know some people may think this as singles being charged double the per person rate but it's really just the cost of the room.

As for Trip Advisor, I'm starting to trust it less and less as there are too many junk reviews - either from people complaining about the smallest possible thing ("they didn't serve my favourite breakfast cereal" and the "TV didn't show Eastenders" are two of my favourites!) or others claiming it is the best hotel in the world (unlikely when you are talking about a £30 a night B&B in Blackpool or a Travelodge on the A1!)

The thing is with Trip Advisor, you get a feel for the type of people who are reviewing it and what their best and worst type of holidays are. Then you have to sort of read between the lines.

You always get a couple of whingers and they even post photos of things like 'look, some dirty grout in the corner of the shower' when its a 2 star hotel in the first place!

I can normally suss a place out by the majority of reviews and the types of things those people say they did on their holiday. Maybe I'm in the minority?

Perhaps we should start an MSE Solo Travel Club so lone travellers can find a travel partner if they want one.

Great idea! (..... at your own risk though, of course). LOL!
