hi, at the moment i use a few compact cameras nut im looking to upgrade to a dslr, im interested in the rebel series and the furthest i could stretch is to £400 (well its going to be a xmas pressie to myself) i dont need any pro functions just something basic but ableto give better quality photos than my compact cameras do. im most interested in the g11, but i cant realy justify the price on something thats just a souped up compact

DSLRs aren't a cheap toy. If your budget is only 400 quid, you won't be able to afford any other lenses and you'll be stuck with the kit lens.
The G11 might be a souped up compact, but it'll outperform your bog-standard compact camera by quite a distance.
Anyway, here's the Canon EOS 1000D with a standard lens: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B001TOD3YG
Only £343
You could always buy this Nikon D60 for £269.99 - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330470531457
then buy a nice 50mm f1.8 lens for £89.99 - http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005LEN40 -
I'd recommend looking on ebay for a 300d or a 350d- one of the first rebels. They're replaced now by newer models, but gave decent photos, and had nice functions. My only gripe with them was they were too light!
If you're only getting into it, second-hand's a good market to start with.0 -
at the moment i think the basic kit lense would be enough, ive looked at the canon 1000d as it seems to be the cheapest rebel , the olympus evolt range seems decently priced at too0

I'm getting the Canon EOS 1000D in November. I've been researching so much it's untrue.
This should help you.

Agreed.
First question you have to ask yourself is what do you want to use the camera for? If it's simply a case of getting yourself a better camera to take better photos for you, you're wasting your money with an DSLR. Firstly it's the photographer that makes a photo, not the camera - my friend takes better photos with his point and shoot than I do with my DSLR. Secondly the whole point of an entry level DSLR is to have extra control over your photo - far from pro (pro cameras start at £1-2k), but enough buttons/features to keep an amateur entertained. Are you going to be changing shutter speed, aperture, ISO... or are you simply going to keep it on auto and take some photos? It's not quite clear in your post.
If you are serious about getting an SLR then think of it as a long term investment, not a purchase. Over the coming years you'll be investing in the make in terms of extra lenses, batteries, flash etc. The camera is just the initial outlay of that investment. On that basis I would suggest avoiding investing in Olympus and stick with an investment in Canon or consider Nikon.
The alternative is a bridging camera. Not quite a point and shoot and not quite a DSLR. Much cheaper than a DSLR and can take better photos than the average point and shoot.ringo_24601 wrote:You could always buy this Nikon D60 for £269.99 - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330470531457

Good choice camera and lens, but probably the wrong combination. I was looking at that lens for my D3000, but it won't autofocus with entry level cameras. More expensive f1.4 it is then

My bad, didn't realise the 50mm f1.8 won't autofocus.. i use a manual version with my Panasonic L10 (it's an old OM lens that cost £30) and with practice you can get some cracking results.
I believe this £98 35mm f1.8 would autofocus with a d60.. https://kvcameras.com/nikon-35mm-f1.8g-af-s-dx
Wish i was prepared to invest in a 4/3rds 50mm f1.8 but i think i'll be ditching my panny in a few years and moving to Nikon so spending £300 on a lens is silly now0 -
My 50mm f1.8 has autofocus and focuses just fine on my Canon DSLR.

I would be wary of kvcameras.com; it looks like a dodgy clone of camerabox.co.uk but seems only to harvest your card details and not actually sell you anything; prices too good to be true - the classic warning sign. I could be wrong but tread with caution!0

ive found bridge camera like the g11 and pen series (dream) to be similarly priced to lower end dslrs, the cheapest i can find in the shops (wouldnt spend that amount unless i could actually handle it instore ie not ebay , amazon) is the canon eos 100d, ive been looking out for the olympus evot range but i cant find it in most of the electrical chains so if anyone has spotted the evolt or could give me thier opinion of the 100d id be grateful
oh, and it wouldnt be just for holiday snaps, i need to build up a portfolio for my college application
thanks0
