Gas/Electric bills

Got our first qrtly bill for our gas in the new house today. it's £69 something. So lets say £70.00

I'm going to compare our metre with the estimate they've sent because we've actually had our hot water/heating/everything turned off over summer (only in the last 3 weeks have we started turning hot water on for baths!) but is £70 a good price?
Annual Grocery Budget £364.00/£1500
Debt payments 2012 £433.27

    Hi bramble,

It's hard to offer advice as it will be dependent on many factors, eg the size of house, how many in your family, whether you are at home or work during the day etc.

You should get more help with this on the Gas & Electricity board so I'll move your thread over there.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. Mmm I have a 5 bed house and our spend this quarter has been less than £40 - but thats solely for hot water for baths (elec shower) and washing and cooking on the hob (elec oven)

    Sounds like a good plan!

That sounds a lot to me unless you cook by gas .Who are you with?perhaps you need to switch your supplier on the compare sites, check them out see if you can find a cheaper tariff.

OP, you haven't said if your bill is based on an actual reading or estimated reading, so how can anyone tell you what is a 'good price'?
The only thing that matters is, does the usage charged on the bill correspond with the usage shown on your meter? If it does, then the bill is correct.
If you are still on the supplier that was in place when you moved in, the you are probably on the standard tariff, which is the most expensive. Get on a comparison site and switch.

You appear to have missed this bit, macman ;)

Hence why I suggested taking an actual meter reading, comparing that to the estimate (and advising the supplier of the same) was a good plan. :)

The OP's post is ambiguous, as it refers to 'bill' and then 'estimate'.
    OP needs to clarify which.
A lot of people post on here carping about the size of their latest bill, which all too often merely turns out to be on an estimated reading on one end or the other.

  • We have just moved into a 2 bed mid terraced and our 1st quarterly gas bill was £36, used for hot water and cooking

I believe the OP means it is an estimated bill which would have been calculated using an estimated meter reading.

... but I fully accept that it may be ambiguous from the post and a clarification by the OP would help in such circumstance. :)
