Week 5: 4th October - 10th October 2010
Q: Every year a cull of between 900-1000 deer is taken from the existing deer population on Jura, producing approximately how much venison from the island?
A: ???
I can't find it stated anywhere. I tried calculating it by taking the weight of deer on Jura from here then taking the dressed weight from here then this site says to half it to get the amount of venison, then finally multiplying it by 1000 - that gets me to 39 tonnes at the lower end of the estimate or 52 tonnes using the average which inclines me towards 45 tonnes. But I'd only use this if I find nothing else!0 -
Week 5 - THIS REPORT from 2004-2005 (look at bottom of p23/top of p24) gives a cull of stags giving £20,800 of venison @ £1/kg and hinds giving £8,300 of venison @ £0.45/kg. I make this 39.2 tonnes. The cull is stated as 815. Using the 815 figure and if the cull is now 900-1000 then scaling up the 39.2t gives 43-48 tonnes.
I'm going for 45 tonnes.0 -
I guess it depends on the % of male to Female deer taken? Looking at 2 diff estates only , both of them take a rough ratio of 2 hinds to every 1 stag for culling. so if we say 1000 deer (ease of maths :P )are culled, then 333 stags,664 hinds.
The average weight from the page linked would be 20st for stags and 9stone for hinds?
So: 333 x 20st (stags) + (664x 9st hinds) = 6660st+ 5976st= 12,636st? in total
Ive searched and found ranges of meat to live weight varying on the skill and method of the butchering process
If we assume that a skilled manual or very efficent mechanical process is employed, then I think the most consistent % is about 45 to 40% venison weight of original deer weight.!?
So 45% of 12,636st = erm... 5,686.2 st
Not sure what that is in kg or tonnes
Is there Deer in the Derby Peak District ?:D:p
Edit: about 36.1 Tonns,

:rotfl: The things you learn on this forum, this morning Robert Pattinson and Kirsten Stewart are 89% compatible, this afternoon a trip round Derbyshire, this evening, deer butchery.
Thanks for your help, useful to know we're all coming out low so 45 tonnes is looking good0 -
:j45 it is then ,lol0
