Funnily enough, I just got through reading the latest posts on this thread, then checked my email, only to find, from Euroffice:

Use this e-mail before the 13th November to receive:

    TRIPLE REWARD POINTS
The more you buy, the more you earn!
    NO minimum Purchase amount

Or Enter ref code: '1106KA' at the checkout

Hope this works, and helps you all.

    Regards

Hi all - please help - I sent a book out on 25th Oct and the buyer is claiming they haven't received it and immediately threatening negative feedback - they have now sent 3 e-mails demanding direct refund. I have asked them to allow 7 days, then report the item not received via Ebay process - it's only £1.75 but I have never had this sort of trouble and want to finalise the process correctly - what do I do?

Stall them as long as you can without being confrontational. However if they have not got their item then all you can do is refund them in full and then after 15 working days reclaim your loss from the Royal Mail, assuming of course you have a certificate of posting.

I'm not sure why you asked your buyer to report yo to ebay, most seller would go out of their way to avoid being reported? Assuming they paid by paypal they can chargeback the full amount and start a claim as early as day 7. Even if they did not pay by paypal you should treat your buyers no differently, and still refund as it is your responsibility to ensure they get their goods, or cover yourself with a COP to enable you to refund and reclaim your own losses.

For more information come over and ask on the ebay forum (see my sig)

Thanks Soolin - I posted it 1st class as they did not ask for Recorded. No certificate, just put stamps on and posted.

I thought you had to follow Ebay process for an item that wasn't delivered, so both people could cancel the auction? I still feel strongly that the item must have arrived as my address and their address was clearly labeled. I feel that as it was a £0.75 auction they may be buying feedback, then blackmailing to get money back?

  • Oh eagerlearner you should always get proof of posting for ebay items - it's free and insures you up to £30 - I hope this one works out for you - having negative feedback that you don't deserve isn't nice :grouphug:

Thank-you for all the information about euroffice and the nighttime reward link!

Any insurance is for the seller not the buyer, at the very least do as hannah suggests and always send things via the PO and ask for a certificate of posting as that enables you to get your costs back.

Post does go astray, it happens and it is much more likely than Royal Mail have lost your item than having a buyer scam you for such a small amount. Regular ebayers are quite aware of the limitations of Royal Mail hence the advice on using certificares of posting.

The ebay procedures for items not received are designed to come into effect where the seller refuses to deal with the buyer, leaving the buyer no redress other than to go into dispute. You really don't want ebay and/or paypal involved if you can help it as it gets nasty and you'll just irritate your buyer into leaving a negative. I have had packages lost, it happens and regular users on the ebay board know my saga of having lost my mothers birthday gifts two years running now (and you can't believe how much trouble I am in with my mother  ).However, despite losses I have had no negative feedback and all my buyers with lost items have left me glowing positive feedbak for handling the situation .

I would normally try and stall my buyer into week two, and maybe even suggest they call their local sorting office to see if the parcel is there, especially if it is too large for a letter box. If all that fails, refund promptly, through gritted teeth if you must, but remaining positive and upbeat to your buyer. If you think they are scamming you then you can always frighten them a wee bit by asking for their landline number as 'Royal Mail do like to check out when claims are made for lost items' , the buyer need not know that you are not going to claim. Sometimes it can happen that being told that they may be checked by Royal Mail gets their package arriving in minutes !

Assuming you refund with a good heart your buyer will probably leave positive feedback, and at that point leave a positive in return but....mention something about sorry item lost, money refunded or such like. That way future sellers can see if a pattern develops and it might put off someone who considers claiming non receipt fraudulently.

Thanks Soolin - will do - however in 7 years I've had no probs on Ebay and now in the space of 3 weeks I have had 1): One £10 Argos voucher purchased via Paypal then posted it, only to find they then reversed the payment so I would have lost £10 buy Paypal nicely refunded it 2) Someone buy vouchers and then pretend to send payment via Postal Order, then pretend to send bank transfer, then ignore comms, ignored final warning, then instantly contacted me once I'd left negative feedback after 17 days 3) Now someone immediately threatening neg feeback over an item that was £0.75, no niceties at all - just threats.

Seems like the nice old E-bay is just different breed of people now - maybe I just need to harden up!

Anyway - I have learnt my lesson - all future auctions will state 'payment in 3 days' and 'proof of postage always retained'. However, seems to me that people like this 3rd one would still cause a problem even if I did have proof of postage - how do I handle that?

Sorry about the rant... Last night items sold well, so I should be able to update my sig quite a bit today - at least some good news!

    !

The 3 day payment rule is not worth putting in your auction terms, after all what will you do if they don't pay. You can't even start an NPB until day 7? It just looks confrontational and will put people off who will assume you don't know how ebay works.

The 3rd scenario happens, things get lost it is very unlikely you are being scammed, the buyer is probably over on the ebay forum now asking what to do as they've been scammed by a seller who hasn't sent their item  Seriously though, the problem with the 3rd scenario is with the Royal mail, not ebay or your buyer, Royal mail were actually on Breakfast TV a few weeks back admitting that they mislay far too many items. You need to protect yourself against the Royal mail by always getting a certificate of posting from the Royal mail for items up to £32, it's a good moneysaving tip as it is free! A COP won't stop a paypal chargeback or a complaint, but it does means you can refund happily and with a good attitude and then reclaim your loss from the RM after 15 working days.

If you browse the ebay forum (see my sig) you'll soon pick up tips like this to make your ebaying safer for you.

Lastly, think of this from your buyers point of view. They buy something and it never arrives, so they contact the seller expecting an acknowledgement that a refund will be made if item doesn't arrive soon, and instead they get the brush off and told to 'complain to ebay' if they have a problem. If you look at it like that you can see why the buyer is possibly getting a bit unpleasant.
