Could you explain to us how the private sector contributed to years of Labour spending more money than it had. THIS is the issue at hand, not the credit crunch.

The government's plans are to reduce public spending and the budget deficit. The private sector, banks etc had absolutely nothing to do with that. Last time I checked, Goldman Sachs didn't control the Exchequers spending plans.

On the contrary, had it not been for the huge influx of taxes paid to the government by the Square Mile during 2003-2007, the deficit would be considerably higher.

And before you start on about the government bank bailouts, let me remind you that they had absolutely no impact on the deficit. The government's shares in the banks appear on the balance sheet as assets - not liabilities - and either are or are close to generating a PROFIT for the taxpayer.

Haha, if you think those paltry profits will plug 850bn I've got some RBS shares I'd like to sell you.

To absolve the banks of responsibility in this and say the bailouts had no impact on the deficit is not plausible. Yes Labour overspent and wasted huge amounts but they also bailed the banks and the rest of us out. They swapped their underwater assets for Gilts to replenish the capital of the banks, who do you think makes up the difference or do you really believe that CDO squared the BOE now holds will get back to par value?

Both Labour and the banks have shafted you and your children royally. Even with all the proposed and announced cuts, official
govt debt will still be larger by 2013-14, add in all the off balance sheet liabilities and you're looking at 4 trn total debt.

Blame who you want, doesn't change that the UK is in a financial mess.

In just one secondary school 48 laptops have been given (actually a grant of £500) to each family on Income support.

My maths makes that £24,000 for one secondary school. Mulitiply that by all the secondary schools in Uk Plus all the Key stage 2 children who were also eligible.

Another set of funding for this year is a Grant of £80 for each child of parents on Income support to attend after school activities.

Instantly that must be at least a £1m that can be 'cut' from the budget.

Maybe it can be given to working parents who after paying their rent/mortgage/childcare/income tax etc find themselves unable to afford to buy their kids a laptop or pay for ballet lessons either!!!!!

  • 25% cuts to all benefits except old age pensions, NOTHING for third (or more children) giving 10 months notice of the change - as a start. One exception natural multiple births after the first child.
That should sort a few things out.

that's not very nice - those people have contributed to the system all their working lives; worked hard and have saved hard to have that that money and now because cuts are needed they're the ones to be hit with the cuts.

not nice devon, not nice at all.

If you don't hit those with money then who do you hit? Those without money?? Can't you see a little problem there?

It's NOT how much money you have it's how you spend it, when people learn that we might, just might, start to get somewhere.

Another one from the "everyone on benefits is a scrounger with too much money" brigade...

Do you really think that people claiming incapacity benefit for example could afford a 25% cut in benefit? Perhaps someone who fought in Afghanistan and can no longer work because of their injuries? You know, a completely legit claimant!

That's the thing that's wrong with so many people who attack the welfare state...All they see is fraudulent claims and those with a "life style choice to live on benefits"...yet fail to recognise those that actually rely on it.

What's even worse is that this government is going to hurt so many genuine claimants whilst going after the scum...

I seriously hope that I'm never in the position that I need to rely on a welfare state that I have paid into for years...because it simply won't be there!

Such generalisation again eh! Once people stop talking such nonsense then we WILL get somewhere!

Clearly you haven't. The soldier who lost his leg, the person suffering from a debilitating illness...they claim housing benefit...yet you want to cut it by 25%? Kick them out of their home.
