I have received a letter today from scottish Power stating that I have unauthorised credit on my pre paid electric meter. I ALWAYS top my key up at our local post office but do not keep receipts once money has been accepted by my meter. I have phoned Scottish Power who have stated that this relates back to 19th October on my 1st ever top up with them. They are now trying to charge me twice for my electric when I havent bought from one of these doorstep crooks. Basically Scottish power have said that I'm lying and unless I have receipts to proove it I just have to pay. I dont have those receipts but can't afford to pay again and why should I? Any suggestions on what I can do now?

lionchops, did the person who fitted the meter transfer the credit from your old meter onto the new one (or the credit that was on there when you moved in and got your own key) ? It could be that this wasn't recorded on his/her paperwork at the time and it's this money they're chasing up....just a thought.

British gas are trying to charge us £50.00 for this exact thing! they are going to apply the debt to our meter in the next 7 days, I fortunately have 90% of the receipts from when we have topped up as we have only recently moved here (Feb) and it is the first time we are using pre-paid meters so wanted to monitor the costs before deciding if to change them over.

Im really concerned that theyre going to suggest that the times we do not have a receipt for we have bought 'criminal' electric!?

Im passing the letter to my landlord to see if he can shed any light on the matter, I am certainly not paying this debt and will insist my landlord does if Birtish Gas dont back down! We have only ever topped up at the paypoint units!
