Obviously I agree with tricia on this one because of our own experience with the 'cheap' £165 Sony CRT. The picture is bright, the contrast is good, and something we noticed on every LCD screen we viewed during research -- the shimmering / shadowing of text: we specifically asked to see news output programmes with news tapes running below them -- is entirely absent. (I think the term is 'ghosting', but I could be wrong!)

Smashed's point is a good one because it makes me wonder if, though we're told what we're missing, we're not actually missing that much. We're content with the images we see and remain content with them until manufacturer hype starts on about what isn't there. Well, if it isn't there, we don't see it, and unless we're conscious of its absence, then the argument for being able to see that which isn't seen (but will be, consequent upon the expenditure of several £hundreds) is a pretty hard one to make.

Nor is the trade entirely unaware of the situation: at one retailer's showroom, we were told to "stop worrying about High Definition" (we weren't worrying, anyway) because "many people won't actually be able to tell the difference anyway and worse, they'll link up a cheap DVD player to an expensive HD set because they don't know any better".

Well, not sure what that means, but it does take me back to the golden days of home hi-fi, when users were being exhorted to buy speakers costing £000s in order to marvel at a range of audio frequencies. . . which were actually beyond the perception of anyone over 25.

Fortunately we have enough space at the moment to accommodate a bulky, old-fashioned CRT. Those who don't have that space to spare will therefore find the LCDs a godsend. So perhaps the true essence of the CRT v LCD / plasma isn't about consumer electronics at all but about consumer environment. . .

The first place that springs to mind is What HiFi, which you'll have to buy a copy of. They seem to give them quite poor reviews.

There are a few posts on AV forums saying these are back in stock at some stores.
Has anyone had a call from their local store yet?

    thanks,

  • Hello, newbie here..sorry to cut in without any kind of introduction of myself. My Mother is interested in buying an LCD HD TV and as I'm a student working at Sainsbury's where there is an offer of an SONY Bravia kdl26u2000 LCD HD TV at £499.99. Due to large discount of 15% ending (10th january) with the staff discount card I have, is this TV worth buying?

MY problem is that a BUSH HD TV, which I have seen is the same price but at 32" instead of 26" of the SONY. The quality looks excellent but I haven't seen it playing a DVD, where as I have with the SONY (which is noticable difference to any of the other TV's) I know BRAVIA is supposed to be a lot better colour but is it really worth paying the extra considering the warranties are the same and I've never had a problem taking anything back anyway.

BUSH isn't any make, I know they have been around a while and starting to produce pretty good applicances now..so ?

I would go for the Sony, at a smaller size and better manufacturer it will give a better picture. The problem with LCD's is how they handle dark images, such as night scenes and fast moving action. The Sony will be better than the Bush.
