Renault Megane - Exhausted Exhaust

Hi all,
Just looking for a quick bit of reassurance so that I can sleep easier tonight. I'm afraid I'm a bit of a girlie-girl when it comes to cars (just cars though - I can even understand football and cricket!) and I'm freaking out a bit.
I think the exhaust might have gone on my ten-year-old Renault Megane. It's just this evening started getting noisy - enough to make people look in the street. Could one of you gallant gentlemen out there (or a well-informed lady) advise me of what sort of cost might be involved in getting a new exhaust for my car? I'm jittery because I have an IVA and not many spare pennies.
Thank you ever so much in anticipation...
P.S. I refuse to ever use Kwik-Fit again after a catalogue of shaming disasters with them a few years back (different car) - but my local independent garage are extremely reliable and honest.
Cheers,
Ruth x

They probably won't be able to fit an exhaust cheaper/quicker than KwikFit though.RuthnJasper wrote: »Hi all,

If you're exhaust has gone, it needs a new exhaust, not a lot more to it really. Would need to know where the blow is to be able to advise on price.

Hi Andy,
Thank you so much for your reply - you're a complete star!
Well, the exhaust pipe is fairly rusty, but soundly attached to the car, and the car passed its MOT with no problems last October. The noise it's making is loud and grating, but disappears as I accelerate and move into higher gears. I wonder if it might be perhaps the filter, or the main 'box' bit. Sorry to sound so useless; I just can't get my head around mechanics.:( Ironically, my IQ is 159 - but if you hand me a spanner and ask me to fix a car, I'll probably run away crying!
How much does a whole, complete new exhaust system cost, do you think?
Many thanks again.

I'm not too bothered about getting it cheaper than Kwik-Fit. My experiences with them (apologies if you work for them - I'm sure not all branches are as rubbish as mine was) just led me to conclude that trying to save money with them is really a false economy. I was really just wondering what worst-case scenario I might be up against!
Thank you again. x0 -
hi depends on which part but as rough guide about £50 quid for rear box(if standard not sports) , £70/80 for middle part, if the catalytic convertor has gone which could be your noise your hearing, typically for a type approved non genuine one anything from around £80 to £150, this depends on length of warranty on the exhauts..., one year warranty exhausts are quite a bit cheaper than ones that come with 2/3 year warranty. hope this helps you out:)0

Chunder (any relation to Cardinal Chunder...?) - you are a total legend. Thank you so much for your words of advice.
That's most helpful - and not as horrendous as I was fearing (bad enough - but just about cope-able for me), and I guess I'd have to add labour charges on to that. But at least I'm not looking at a job that's worth more than I paid for the car (@£500).
Very many thanks again; you've helped to set my mind at rest!
Sweet dreams - and hopefully not too many unwanted exhaust-emmisions under the duvet...
!

My dog, Jasper, is a trained locksmith, by the way. Every time I say it's time to go to the vets, he makes a bolt for the door....

Are you sure its not the exhaust clamp thats rotted away? Its quite chunky (when new) clamp that joins the downpipe (engine side) of the exhaust to the underfloor part and with age simply rusts through and gives up. As you accelerate and deccelerate the engine rocks backwards and forwards closing the gap (quietens down) and opening up, causing the roar.
Less than a tenner and easy to fit and I'd hate to condemn an old car for a simple fix.0
