The problem is that their system allows you to re-set a password, accepts that password and then you find it fails to work when you login.

So, what do you do? Try again? So you go through the procedure again....................and the same happens.

You then speak to the Saga helpline. Somebody tells you that they have had problems with their system and tell you to try again.

So you try again to login. It fails. You try again. So you then try and reset your password. The system accepts your new password.

So you login again. Login fails.

You then wait until Monday for the helpline to open. The helpline then tells you that your password must be 10 characters or less.

Why didn't you tell me this in the first place? Why does the system accept new passwords and then users find they fail at login. Why does not the system advise users that passwords in excess of 10 characters will fail? Why did not Saga advise those with passwords in excess of 10 characters to change them?

I wasted a couple of hours messing about just to get into my account.

The whole set up seems a bit amateurish in my view.
Take my advice at your peril.

So how come my 16 character password works? Is this this 10 character limit only imposed when you change your password?

For some reason the system stopped recognising a password I had held for well over as year.

Clearly I'm not the only one affected as the posts above confirm.

Why your 16 character password is still recognised is a question only Saga can answer. One day you may find that yours stops working as I found out to my inconvenience. Its ludicrous that Saga failed to post a message on their website.

I got caught like this a year or so ago with another bank (HFC part of HSBC). My password had 11 characters ending with 2 numbers - and suddenly I got locked out! After several phone calls to Mumbai I got told that there was a maximum of 10 characters-she couldn't explain why it had been working successfully for several months previously.

Oh well, at least I'll know what's going on if/when it does happen!

Given that the Saga accounts are handled by Birmingham Midshires (who also do the AA accounts), and that they all share identical log in procedures, I wonder if they too are affected?

It really is something that Saga need to sort with Birmingham Midshires. Actually something that is a right pain is if you have online accounts with Saga then you open something with BMids the next time you do to Saga, you get BMids. You have to clear the cookies to get over it. I only discovered that by mistake, by mistakenly clicking the logon button to BMids then cancelled. Then when I went to Saga up came BMids.

The same occurred a few months back when I looked at a bond offered ostensibly by LTSB. I clicked the Apply button and up came a screen looking remarkably like Saga/BMids apart from the LTSB logos. Same problem then log to Saga and get 'LTSB'. It was obviously run by BMids as there was a different phone number to use to LTSB after opening (which I didn't). Same cure - clear cookies. Right pain!

That's odd. I have accounts with Saga, Birmingham Midshires and AA, and I've never seen the problem you describe.

I don't actually have accounts with BMids or any other BMids 'bank' only what I described. Well maybe once you have accounts, different cookies get written to the PC to differentiate. When it happend when I accidentally click the BMids logon button, it was Saga who told me to clear the cookies so it must be something they were aware of in some instances at least. It has tended to put me off having Bmids accounts for that reason as you can imagine, but perhaps I can reassess for the future and ask then direct about that 'problem'.

You don't I suppose have your PC set to automatically clear all history on Exit? But that would not fix going to Saga and BMids in the same session of course (thinking aloud here ;) )

Yes I have it set to clear history (but not cookies) on exit. And anyway, once a month I do check all my accounts sequentially without closing the Browser, so in that case since I don't close the Browser between accounts nothing should be cleared.
