Who is ics? It's not RM's fault you sent it uninsured.

ignorance is no defence. You have to pay extra for more cover and send recorded.

Recorded would have been no use in this case - it has the same compensation limit as normal post of £41 (100 x 1st class stamp). It should have been send special delivery.

I did ask for those red or grey notes with a royal mail stamp, I think proof of postage, but the guy said he ran out. So I went on my way
    .

He did't even obtain a (free) certificate of posting _party_

and now he complains the item is lost - and it cost £239

That wouldn't have helped. The RM in most cases wont even refund the £41 COP covers you for if the value is higher than that because as far as they are concerned you have sent via the wrong postal method (Which you have)

Is this hidden somewhere on Royal Mail's website then or is it something they only mention after the event ?

because I can only see mention of "valuables" and 100 x first class stamp for non "valuables"

It is unforunate that the "guy at the till" didnt tell him "he can only claim £40" and the guy also ran out of "those red or grey notes with a royal mail stamp, I think proof of postage"
