• Hi, sorry if this is not posted in the correct place, but as the title suggests, I am a Slow Cooker virgin. I would dearly love any suggestions as to guides to recipes, what's good to cook and what's not. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The slow cooker is 3.5l. Thank you so much!!

• I thought long and hard about a slow cooker.I decided that as the MSE lady are usually right I would risk one. I have done a ham hock and stewing beef so far and I am now totally hooked. Thank you all. Itis really great.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com.

I think you'll get more replies and help over on this board :)

Hi sammikins,

In addition to the link posted by Harriet, these threads have lots of recipes that should help:

Lots of good books on slow cooking. Try your local library & if they don't have any, see if they can obtain some from other branches. I did this & wrote down the recipes I most wanted to make. It turned out that the book I nearly bought wasn't actually as good as some of the others, so it can be worth doing, before you commit to spending money on buying one. What surprised me from the books I borrowed was how many different things you can make, not just joints & stews. I've made curries, sweet & sour, chillies, etc, as well as the more usual things, & chicken stock now always gets made in there, v trouble-free & doesn't fill the house full of steamy condensation like the pan used to do.

Please can someone tell me if I can put pasta in the SC?

I already have a chicken/ veg tomatoey type stew bubbling away in there, but it could do with bulking up and the kids may be more inclined to eat it if it has pasta in it.
Can I just chuck some dried penne in? Or do I need to parboil it first?

No, don't parboil. The book I have says only add pasta for the last 30 mins or it will get too soft and mushy. Also to make sure it's immersed in the sauce.
