Preparing for winter II

Regarding the temperature at which to keep a house, i always go for around 20 degrees. We may be able to live with a lower temeperature, but one thing i consider is the house itself. If it is too cold then as we live in a Victorian terrace i worry about damp problems so find around 20 degrees is a happy medium to keep the house warm and dry as well as us!
Desperately need new curtains before winter in our lounge, i washed mine and they shrank by 4 inches! That was following the care wash label too! Hoping a charity shop will come up trumps at some point, but a i need two matching pairs i'm not too hopefull! Really can't afford shop prices at the mo though.0 -
hiya, ive just spent a few days reading through as and when i get a moment and am now up to page 182  have moved house so the winter prep i did last year ive got to redo most of it this year so here is my list
Also expecting a baby around the 21st december, so want to have everything sorted out by the time i go on maternity on 1st november so that if it is like last winter im sorted and dont need to go out.
I dont have a gas hob anymore, would you recommend buying a camping stove just in case? i didnt bother with anything like that last year as i had a gas hob but saying that i think i only lost power for a couple of hours in total, so not sure if its worth it.
Buy new kingsized duvet for spare bed
buy wind up torch/phone charger
curtains for front door
curtains for hall windows
curtains for french doors
curtains for bathroom windows
sort out car kit (de-icer, scraper, spare wipers, washer fluid, cash, phone, charger, blanket, shovel & brush)
find gloves and put in accessable sensible place
check over walking boots and wellies and make sure still in good nick
ask neighbour what the houses round here were like last winter (was in in relatively new build before, now in a 1950's build)
put up gas direct debit to ensure decent credit for winter
get gas fire safety checked
ive already bought a couple of nice chunky winter cardigans, it will be the OH thats going to need winter clothes as the past couple of years he hasnt been here for christmas so it will be a shock to his system after being used to dubai winter weather :rotfl:
ive still got all my flannel bedding as that was bought the past couple of years so no need to buy more of that as its all in good condition, have an electric plug in radiator for that extra burst of heat if needed. most likely to be used in babys room or bathroom.
i do have a relatively decent store cupboard so could last a couple of months on what i have in, although it would get repetative but it just needs topping up with a few little bits.
baked beans
tomato soup (i go through buckets of the stuff)
uht milk
bottled water
diluting juice
rice
i think thats my winter prep list done, just need to get started on it now, and also finish reading the thread0 -

May I suggest using some of your ,maternity leave to cook some food, like chilli con carne, bolognaise, lasagne etc for the freezer. Handy for your winter plus the fact you'll have a new baby it'll come in handy when you CBA to cook a meal! I did it & it was handy. Dont forget things you need for the days after your baby is born like maternity pads, lighter sanitary ones etc...don't need to be caught short over the christmas period.x0

another box of dishwasher salt for the stores - although lidl mustr be reading this thread as it was 89p in our store - sure someone mentioned it was 79p just the other day!Me, DD1 19, DS 17, DD2 14, Debt Free 04/18, Single Mum since 11/19
Debt £2547.60 / £2547.600 -
Mr M has 3 packets of their own brand "add water and boil" soups for £1, so I've bought 3 packets of that chicken soup one. It looks creamy enough and with some 10p noodles added to it should be a lovely meal.
Otherwise, Mum gave me some beans from their garden which will be stashed in the freezer for another day. Also, found a bargainous book today in the library discards sale. It was a book on cuddly toy animal patterns and set me back the grand total of 60p. That should give me something to do over the cold winter months!

How about adding a contrasting band in them and making a couple of scatter cushions to match? You could manage this from one curtain from a CS to save on pennies and give your room a whole new look.0 -
Well today I've had various people round to quote for replacing guttering, fascias and sofits, installing a new garage door (current one is 40 years old knackered and there is a 6 inch gap above it which lets a lot of cold into the house - it's an integral garage) and also to replace a double glazing unit in our front window which has got a dud seal. Feel like we're making progress!
For those looking for flanelette sheets, VERY have now got them on buy one get one free and they're reduced so it works out at £5.10 for 2 x double sheets (delivery is free if you use collect+):
